Things like this have plagued the Olympics throughout time. Remember when Roy Jones Jr beat that dude all over the ring for all three rounds yet they raised the other guys hand in victory? That was blatant and it's happened frequently over the years

This begs the question that if this particular judge has a history of doing this exact same thing for this same team, how the hell was she allowed to judge this event??

They should throw the low score out to fight bias in these "judgement" competitions.

Can’t believe that’s not already a thing.

With that many judges they should be throwing out the 2 extremes

The inverse is true here too - The US judge graded France low and US high.

Not to the same extent, and the French couple did make a mistake. The Americans did not. It’s not just that the French judge overvalued the French pair, she undervalued the Americans. A nine point difference is huge in figure skating.

She also has a history of doing this to help this particular couple win. Why was she even allowed to judge them?

I feel like the easy fix here is to have 9 judges and get rid of the highest and lowest score or top 2 and bottom 2. Then you have to have a lot of collusion for this to be an issue

However, looking at this graph, the French had 4/6 of the top 6 scores total and judge 4 had them as the exact same.

Am I reading that wrong? No one is complaining about Judges 3 and 9 who had the French far ahead

Sports that allow subjective scores lead to this.

It was during the cold war. They quit it after the USSR fell.

Why do they let judges from the country of the participants score their own?

This ^^^

Add one more judge as an alternate to judge when a judge’s compatriots are competing.

Didn't they used to have a system where if the judge was from the same country, they had to recuse themselves, or something like that?

I really hope we see the French, Canadians, and Russians fricked over in LA '28 & Utah '34. It's sucks for Chock and Bates that they'll likely be in retirement for Utah.

They do this in diving and gymnastics. This should be the standard for all subjective scoring. This was a big deal when it was NATO vs the Eastern Bloc but it's even more important now when you see these rogue judges.

It should be judges who are not from countries where the last two groups come from and then toss the low/high. As Americans the issue remains that there are judges who will automatically judge our athletes lower than they judge European athletes. So really it's just putting lipstick on a pig.

The Roy Jones Jr scandal did led to some reforms but boxing never recovered from it. Then you had the guy knocking out females in Paris along with the question of whether it would be on the program for 2028. Frankly I don't think it's even a top tier Olympic sport anymore. Skating needs to get their shite together before the next generation views it as the same fixed joke.
