The Federal Aviation Administration issued unexplained notices late Tuesday closing airspace over El Paso and a large patch of southern New Mexico west of Santa Teresa for 10 days. El Paso International Airport is closed to all flights, the city said.

The orders close off all air travel in the affected area, which could cause massive disruption in the nation’s 23rd largest city.

“THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) CLASSIFIES THE AIRSPACE DEFINED IN THIS NOTAM AS ‘NTL DEFENSE AIRSPACE’. PILOTS WHO DO NOT ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING PROC MAY BE INTERCEPTED, DETAINED AND INTERVIEWED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT/SECURITY PERSONNEL,” the notices said.

“THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT MAY USE DEADLY FORCE AGAINST THE AIRBORNE ACFT, IF IT IS DETERMINED THAT THE ACFT POSES AN IMMINENT SECURITY THREAT,” the notice continued.

Crazy to shut down a major airport for 10 days. Sucks for anyone that flew in for work and now can't get out or has a vacation upcoming.

Cartel related?

Very bizarre, and I can’t think of any benign reasons for this.

It is only closed 17,000 feet and below. You can fly over it.

That doesn’t change things much. It’s easy to go around a small airspace like that; it’s the shutdown of the airport that is so critical.

This is 10 day shut-down of a 2 fairly large radius areas. This is a significant deal.

You don’t have to convince me. I was arguing just that.

This is strange. If it was technical reasons they would say it.
Anybody check in with MonkeyWerx and see what he had to say?

Someone speculating a high profile person going into El Paso soon, but that makes 0 sense.

Not since 9/11 has a shutdown like this happened.

I'm going with credible terrorism threat to planes inbound/outbound that is being investigated.

The FAA cited “special security reasons” for the restriction, which covers airspace over El Paso, Texas and the neighboring community of Santa Teresa, N.M. The agency also noted that the airspace over Mexico is not covered by the NOTAM — El Paso, a city of roughly 680,000, is located on the Rio Grande across from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The airport confirmed the 10-day stoppage on its Instagram, writing that the FAA’s notice covers all commercial, cargo and general flights.

quote:

Audio captured by atc.com details an air traffic controller in El Paso informing a Southwest Airlines pilot of the stoppage.

“So the airport’s totally closed?” the pilot clarified after the controller informed him of the restriction.

“Apparently, we just got informed about 30 minutes to an hour ago,” the controller responded.

quote:

“So for 10 days, you guys are not open,” the pilot replied, incredulously.

“Well I mean, we’ll be here but no air traffic,” the controller said.

“Ha ha, okay. Thanks for that heads up,” the pilot responded.

yeah. Flying over is one thing, but the danger of anything under 17k, ie landing/take-off, is scary shite indeed. And I would think airlines will want to avoid the airspace even at 17k+.

Maybe some kind of launcher from the ground? I recently heard that some cartels border tunnels were found and taken over, not sure where, but maybe related with threats coming from it, who knows, but this is nuts.

I saw 1 mention where the cartel fired at a Blackhawk

If true, 17k' may be well safe of the known range of whatever weapon was used

10 days may be knee jerk overkill until they rectify the situation. Hypothetically if this was accurate they could conceivably neutralize the threat and reopen airspace in a day or so.
