for $10 billion that the taxpayers would ultimately have to pay?

I'm sure the ardent defenders of all things Trump will say it won't ever come to that but isn't the entire process a waste of resources which is just more wasteful government spending?

quote:

“While the Internal Revenue Code permits a taxpayer to seek redress for unauthorized disclosures, Congress designed this provision to provide compensation for proven harm — not to confer $10 billion dollar windfalls to a President seeking to line his own pockets at taxpayer expense,” Senators Wyden and Warren wrote. “The leaks occurred from May 2019 through September 2020, when President Trump was in office and his hand-picked nominees, Steven Mnuchin and Charles Rettig, controlled the Treasury and IRS respectively. Trump is in essence now suing the government for his own failures during his first term. This lawsuit is a shameless and transparent act of corruption that should make any American’s head spin. We fear that instead of fighting this frivolous attempt by President Trump to profit off the failures of his own administration, cabinet officials intend not only to capitulate to Trump but coordinate with him in this brazen theft from the American people.”

Andrew Jackson paid off the national debt out of his own pocket at his own expense.

Trump is suing a nation trillions in debt for billions at the taxpayers expense for personal gain.

Now do the speed train fraud in California and the Somali fraud in Minnesota and get back to us.

Does Trump deserve civil damages for having the full power and resources of the federal government unleashed against him?

Sure, but not from US taxpayers.

He should personally sue the people that he is claiming are responsible. The US taxpayers surely didn't leak his taxes.

I can't understand your reasoning. The result of a law suit isn't wasteful or fraudulent. Trump is a citizen of the United States and has every right to the Justice system as anyone else.
If he sues the Federal government for whatever reason and the court rules in his favor..... that isn't wasteful or fraudulent. That is Justice.

and they should be fired if they misused their resources as employees....

But to act like the president should put his personal finances above the taxpayers is shameful

Not $10B, but some compensatory damages should be paid. Whatever damage I can prove.

There's this thing called a statute of limitations.

While State of New York finds ways around it (resurrecting tolled misdemeanors into a felony, changing the DOL to resurrect tolled sexual abuse claims), the USA wouldn't.

Trump appointed the head of the treasury. He can get access to any info they have just like Patel did with the FBI documents.
