My daughter has been teaching for 5 years in Allen parish. I know it is not a great place been trying to to get her to move on. Anyway a teacher that has been a her school for thirty years found out her sister had terminal cancer in October. To make matters worse the lady who has cancer also found out her husband had terminal cancer about a month ago husband and wife were both in hospice. The teacher of thirty years applied to get leave to take care of both of them. The sister lasted maybe a week in hospice care. 2 days after the death Allen parish school board tells the teacher, you need to come back to work since your sister died and it was before we could grant you the leave time. The husband has no one to take care of him he may last another week. I’m appalled at how insensitive this was and the school board told the principal he had to tell the teacher to come back to work. How can people be so insensitive. Never in my life have I heard of this. I wish she could sue them and shut that place down.

She should have been offered FMLA by the school system. She’s protected for up to 12 weeks

You get what you get, and don't throw a fit.

We know who the bad admins are.

If true, seems like an overreach by the school board. What is the superintendent's position?

2 years ago he denied a teacher leave to take care of her father who was dying of cancer. He said if it was her child he would think about it. He is an arse plain and simple.

For an immediate family member, I would think the employee would be a lock for FMLA. If it's being challenged, though, she may just have to lawyer up. With a boss like that, I would imagine some form of retaliation, so ultimately she's probably best off leaving the district.

Brad Soileau the Allen Parish Superintendent should be ashamed of himself. A little common sense would go a long way in life if people actually used it.

Nope. FMLA does not cover you taking care of a sibling unless you are their actual legal caretaker.

quote:

FMLA leave to care for a relative is generally limited to caring for a spouse, son, daughter or parent. An eligible employee standing in loco parentis to a sibling who is under 18, or who is 18 years of age or older and incapable of self-care because of a mental or physical disability, may take leave to care for the sibling, if the sibling has an FMLA-qualifying serious health condition.

I am taking 12 weeks FMLA this year because my BM has to have open heart surgery. FMLA is unpaid but my boss said I could work from home. We’ll see how it goes bc we have a 9 month old. Gonna need to get the grandparents to stop partying and prob hire a nanny. Ideally they will watch the baby and I’ll be golfing on the weekdays!!! 12 weeks let’s gooooo!!!
