Shouldn't the targeting penalty been addressed after the Devin White fiasco

“We’re going to be having a discussion on targeting,” Steve Shaw, the national coordinator of officials and the NCAA’s secretary-rules editor, told Yahoo Sports last week from Miami, site of the national title game. “That needs to be an annual discussion. It will be a focus discussion.”

When exploring the penalty structure this offseason, officials must determine if the disqualification — and the carryover disqualification — is still warranted

To this day the dumbest fckin rule in sports.

Still zero clue what targeting actually is.

And call attention to the SEC Bama bias?

Good luck. Watch the video of Devin’s shove (called) vs Dallas’ crown to the chin on Jayden Daniels (ignored) for all you need.

Whatever the refs want it to be in that instant.

Its impossible to apply the written rule to the action on the field consistently. If you watch a video with 4 different officials and ask them to describe what they see, you might get 4 diffent answers. in the end the white hat is going to "err on the side of cautions" which means frick the defense.

Could not agree more. There was already a rule in place for spearing. The current rule is just ridiculous. Defenders have a hard time controlling where their head is going to go when they're already leaning forward and running at full speed trying to put a hit on a runner trying to avoid contact.

So many times the announcers and TV ref are definitive on one side of the call and then the game officials get on the mic and rule the opposite.

It’s crazy they kick guys out of the game and possibly impact the next game on calls that are so ambiguous.

That was one of worst calls in the entire history of college football. It wasn't targeting; possibly roughing the passer, and I'm not even sure that should have been called. Whatever that one play ALONE resulted in 45 penalty yards against the Tigers-- the "targeting" followed by two UCs stemming from the outrage against the initial penalty charge

The amount of times the same play happens twice in a game and is called differently both times is simply outrageous

Not to mention they still get called if the runner lowers his head right before contact. It's just as bad as the NFL not knowing what the hell a completed catch is.

The Alabama no call on the Daniels hit was criminal.

There aren't enough four letter words to describe how ridiculously inconsistent this rule gets enforced!!! Furthermore, a moving target that could be twisting, falling, turning, is at times impossible to know where the head/neck area is going to be. Figure it out or get rid of it!

I don’t care about the rule or its interpretation. But for fricks sake, ejecting the player is the dumbest thing they could possibly do and it really needs to change.

Make it a 25 yard penalty or eject on the 2nd offense, even if the first was in a prior game. Something different than the current crap. It negatively affects too many games.

This times a thousand. There is no other sport that ejects a player for an on field, game action play without there being a blatant level of intent. A pitcher can unleash a 100 mph fastball into a hitters face, and unless there has been a warning, or a previous incident, he isn't tossed. An NFL player can take two steps after the ball is released and plant a QB with helmet to helmet contact and stay in the game.

I am not a big fan of unionizing players, but there is no way in hell the ejection policy would exist if they had one.
