What an uplifting and heartwarming story, though it's a shame her life was cut short so tragically.
For those of you who don't know or who are too young to remember, Samantha Smith was a 10-year-old American girl from the state of Maine who sent a letter to Soviet Premier Yuri Andropov when he came to power in 1982:
Incredibly, Andropov responded personally to Smith's letter and invited her and her family to the Soviet Union. After talking with the U.S. government, they accepted and were treated to a two-week-long whirlwind tour of Russia and its satellite states. The trip made her an international celebrity, and she was a big hit with the people of the Soviet Union. She returned to the United States and was given a ticker tape parade.
Sadly, her life was cut short as she and her father were killed in a plane crash two years later.
CBS News did a story on her some years back:

quote:
Dear Mr. Andropov,
My name is Samantha Smith. I am 10 years old. Congratulations on your new job. I have been worrying about Russia and the United States getting into a nuclear war. Are you going to vote to have a war or not? If you aren't please tell me how you are going to help to not have a war. This question you do not have to answer, but I would like it if you would. Why do you want to conquer the world or at least our country? God made the world for us to share and take care of. Not to fight over or have one group of people own it all. Please lets do what he wanted and have everybody be happy too.

That’s a nice story. We need more of this on the OT.
Well, except for this part…

That is a neat story. I sort of remember it from back in the day.

The pilot of the plane was Russian

I remember that so well. I was about the same age as her, and I was so sad when they announced she died.

Probably a CIA operation to ascertain the mentality Andropov. The story of her death was a cover. Her and her family were given new identities and moved to a remote small town somewhere like Alaska.

I don't recall this at all.

quote:Hahaha! I remember that from the click and clack radio show from years back.
Pickov Andropov.
And their lawyers: Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe….
Sad stuff about the little girl. Almost want to go back and resurrect every mysterious death now that we know how nefarious the deep state has been all these years.
