Ventless gas fireplace causing mantel to get too hot

New house (to me). I have a ventless fireplace and it’s causing the mantel to overheat and shrinking the seam caulk on wood. I’m afraid that if I continue to use it, the heat will cause the wood to warp.
Would a heat deflector fix the issue?
There is no fan.

I think your instincts are right. Ventless fireplaces make the area right above very hot. The heat deflector would probably be the easiest way to deal with the issue. Amazon has some pretty easy to install ones.

There is no easy answer to this. I’ve simply turned down the flame height on mine.
ETA: I think we’d be best off to create a gap between the mantle and the wall to let heat flow upwards.

Did you add a heat deflector?

No, I have not. Honestly never seen any kind of heat deflector for that application

There are minimum allowable distances that should be followed. Find the make/model of your fireplace and look up the manual.

I put an airbar fan (basically a long, thin fan) on my mantle, right at the edge, with it blowing slightly down. That was the easiest and cheapest solution.

I think it’s common with those. I opted for a vented fireplace and sacrificed the heat when we built. My neighbor with a ventless ruins his TV above the fireplace every time he turns it on.

Neighbor should consider a heat deflector and/or fan to direct the heat away from the TV.

Heat deflector is your answer. I have one.
