How many more years until Skenes can jump through arbitration & score a whopper contract?

Hypothetically...
Yes I know it takes 6 years of MLB service until a guy can go free agent - but there are ways around that for great players.
This season will be his 3rd year I think - Could he potentially be making huge money by the beginning of 2027?
there's Super Two status and there's arbitration in years 3-5 I think, or I think a guy can simply ask for a trade before becoming a free agent...
and other stuff I can't get my head around...

Who knows. LAD signing Tucker has all but assured a long arse lockout in 27.

He will make record money for arbitration years.

The Pirates control Skenes' rights through the 2029 season.
Skenes will become eligible for salary arbitration after the 2026 season, meaning he will have three years of arbitration (2027-2029) before he can become a free agent.
The Pirates are expected to pursue a long-term contract extension with Skenes, potentially a record-breaking deal, to secure him beyond his pre-arbitration and arbitration years, though no agreement has been announced as of early 2026.

The only way is for him to sign a big extension with the Pirates that buy out his arbitration years. Or they trade him somewhere and that team signs him a big extension.
He'll make big arbitration money in 27, 28, 29 (assuming no lockout/strike) and then the earliest he can be a fully unrestricted free agent is before the 2030 season.

After 2029 season
2026 - Last year pre-arb
2027 - Arb 1
2028 - Arb 2
2029 - Arb 3
Pirates can always offer him a big deal before to buy out the arb years (I know, lol) But he'll either be traded before then or get the big deal after the 2029 season.

Currently Skubal is in arbitration and should receive either $19m, the Tigers number, or $32m, his number. David Price received $19.7m in 2015 and Framber Valdez received $18m in 2025. It's hard to imagine that Skubal isn't worth more than those 2 after winning the Cy Young 2 years in a row.
Skubal's arbitration will set the bar for Skenes. Boras has said he will allow the Tigers to give them one new number, but basically it better be closer to $32m than $19m.
