The Gulf War air war kicked off. Scott Speicher from VFA-81 became the first US loss. Left behind 2 kids under 4.

I remember gathering around the big-screen TV in the Kirby-Smith lobby. Packed with people, but total silence as we watched it live on CNN.

And 35 years later there are may on this board wanting to handle Middle Eastern foreign policy the same way we did during the days of Kirby Smith!

It was amazing to watch, I was discussing earlier in the week this event w/ my father. We were together when it happened.
Anyone remember that Sortie count after 24 hours? It was something like 1500 and almost 10,000 in the first week. I couldn't fathom this number.

I was in the Air Force stationed in Spain when it started. I remember hearing the B-52’s landing at our base after returning from bombing in iraq. They had taken off from the US.

I was a kid then and can remember being mad because the show I was watching got interrupted. That was about the time the Dark Shadows remake was going strong and they preempted it to show coverage. The Gulf War ended up getting that show cancelled lol. I soon got over being upset and watched amazed at seeing a war play out on tv.

I had been at the mall with friends (malls ruled) and my mom had just picked me up. We heard on the radio that the war had begun.

My strongest memory from the coverage was Arthur Kent on NBC holding his gas mask as the sirens were going off, virtually yelling at the camera that there were incoming scud missiles.
Oddly enough my cousin worked for ARAAMCO at the time and lived in Saudi. He sent me a small envelope with debris from a Patriot and Scud that he somehow was able to get.

It felt like the U.S. Military took all the frustration and embarrassment from Vietnam and rolled it into the gulf war for redemption.
Iraq actually was not a slouch and their military was absolutely dismantled. I’m pretty sure we advanced way faster than we were even anticipating and outrunning supply chains.

It proved the Russian Doctrine was doomed to failure.
Centrally controlled centrally executed command with senior leaders that don't know the battle plan that aren't allowed to react and thinks for themselves versus a dynamic centrally controlled decentralized execution with commanders at all levels having a working knowledge of the battle plan was the true lesson learned.

Good points. Centralized leadership just doesn’t work on a chaotic battlefield.
