December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863.
To most people who aren't knowledgeable about the American Civil War, this battle will undoubtedly be something of a mystery to you. Many of you might never have even heard of it before. But the Battle of Stones River (or Murfreesboro as it was called in the South) was the bloodiest battle in terms of casualty ratio of the American Civil War.
Of the 43,400 men who fought at the battle for the Union, 13,906 became casualties of the war (a ratio of 32%). Of the 35,000 Confederates who were engaged, 11,739 became casualties of war (a ratio of 33.5%). And while the battle was a minor tactical victory for the Union army, strategically neither side gained anything of substance.

That's a great YouTube channel.
Edit: pretty sure they're from monroe, i.e. UL [Monroe], i.e. the warhawks [Indians].

I used to live in Murfreesboro in the 60s. One of the favorite activities for us kids was looking for "minnie balls" in the fields. All I ever found was buckshot.

I've been there. Gorgeous part of the State.

This was one that the South should have won. In this case they had the lower quality generals on the field.

I mean it was Braxton Bragg. You really don't get any lower than him though an argument can definitely be made for Hood.

Jefferson Davis wasn't much better. Like his counterpart in Washington, D.C., Davis did the following:
- Suspended Habeas Corpus
- Allowed the arrest and detention of political critics, editors, and state officials
- Suppressed newspapers openly hostile to his administration
- Clashed repeatedly with Confederate governors, overruling them on issues regarding conscription and manpower
- Enacted the first national draft in American history
- Seized food, livestock, railroads, and supplies through impressment laws
In short...he centralized power while claiming to oppose centralization.
