Disney closed 2025 with two blockbusters crossing the billion-dollar mark, but behind the celebrations lurked a theatrical disaster so severe the studio made a rare decision to abandon ship mid-release. Just three weeks after Ella McCay debuted in American theaters, Disney pulled the plug on its scheduled international expansion, canceling the Jan. 7 premiere in France and effectively burying one of the year’s most expensive misfires.

The abrupt reversal marks an embarrassing conclusion to what should have been a triumphant year for the entertainment giant. While Lilo and Stitch became 2025’s first billion-dollar hit and Zootopia 2 shattered records by reaching that milestone in just 17 days, Ella McCay managed to scrape together barely $4.3 million worldwide through Christmas Day, making it one of Disney’s most catastrophic box-office failures in recent memory.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, and narrated, for some reason, by the voice actress for Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner) a pretty decent cast can't pull this corpse of a movie to the life boat.

They tried to make Lefty tropes funny.

Didn't work out too well.

Further details.

*I don't think it's officially an homage to AOC, but Jeremy sees the likeness, so that's why the title.

*Zero reason to DV a post which gives further context of the failed movie, but snowflakes be snowflakes.

I saw the trailer a time or two, forget where, and figured 'maybe?' , but had zero interest in it personally.

Same, saw the trailer a few times and it had every bad sign imaginable.

I saw the trailer for this several times, but the trailer did a horrible job of telling you what the movie was about. Add to that an unknown lead actress and I think those are two big reasons that this one flopped,

It's got the right people and the right message, but the movie is still trash.

I never heard of this but it looks like a movie I would absolutely skip. Instead of forcing ideas on people, these companies should poll with multiple story summaries to get an idea what the public wants to see. Because telling us what they want us to see isn't it.

Yeah, Woody as the completely moronic dumb white dad character, the brown driver who 'gets' her, a secretary who TELLS you Ella is awesome, just so you know right out of the box, and the best? Psycho hysterical screaming as all normal women do. As the internet tells me.

Yeah, how could this not be trash?

I had never heard of this movie before this thread

Is it a political Broadcast News? B/c that was pretty boring

They can't help themselves make movies for people who'll never show up in the theater and support them.

There aren't enough gays and women to put Wicked 2 into the stratosphere like so many were expecting. Look at CATS. All those theater kids who loved the stage show hated the movie.

It must not be made for me. I just found that painful to watch.

Brooks has always been a niche preference. Arguably Broadcast News was a decent (if not groundbreaking) critique of the commercialization and reduced seriousness of American media.

At this point he's been incorporated into an instrument of the kind of institutions he might have railed against as a young man. Marge Simpson was also much less enjoyable without the animation and clever writing.

They let Brooks make this so he would agree to another Simpsons movie. They gave it a small but legitimate theatrical release with very little marketing. Calm down.

Where are you getting that info from? I thought originally there were supposed to be 3 Simpson's movies. Maybe heard it wrong, long ago.

So, you're angle is that they are fully OK with losing bank on this 'little movie', so we can get another Simpson's movie, 20 years after the 1st one?

Dumb money after dumb money, but that's Hollywood in current day.
