Pretty sure that’s what happened. He could have just grabbed the ball. Total lack of awareness.

It looked like he was in there to clear space for Parker but there was no one there to clear.

Seems like he should have been looking for the ball.
On an onside kick, I’ve never seen the ball hit someone on the kicking team in their hands and they try NOT to get the ball. He had no clue where he was on the field.
