You have to understand that professional sports are BIG BUSINESS, ENTERTAINMENT first and foremost. They are always going to do what is best for business financially.
The entire “may the best team win” and “being a fair/legit sports competition” narrative is somewhere down around #4 or #5 on their priority list.
