Another "Good movies you just don't get" thread

I watched The Paperboy last night, and I couldn't really digest enough to make a thread solely about that. So I'm making a thread about movies with great reviews that just don't sit right with you as a viewer.
The Paperboy seemed like it was written as a homosexual fan fiction with the Civil Rights and old south as a cover. Between the Matthew McConaughey handcuffed scene, Zac Effron constantly in tighty whities, and the random black guy nudity, it seemed like the story was nothing but a delivery system for someone to put those things on film.
The Yardley character and his motivations did not add up.
Nicole Kidman with hybristophilia has her heart strings pulled for a kid with mommy issues?
The brother with one eye gets into a machete fight after he can't see the electric fence that wasn't even hidden?
Mommy issues boy dives into the swamp, splashing all around, and doesn't get eaten by gators? Oh no, he not only swims laps, he hides below the guys boat before he sneaks up to it like he's a navy SEAL before getting away with enough time to get both bodies back to a boat.
The fiance/stepmom was only presented as a gold digger racist, which was the most believable character of the entire movie.

I don’t get the appeal of Woody Allen movies at all
Take out all of his uh…controversies, he could have a clear record. I still wouldn’t find any of his movies funny or interesting.

As the thread title indicates, there were some key things that I just didn't get. I saw the paperboy mentioned several times in movie recommendation threads, but it also has a mediocre RT score. Given the score, I would say it's clear not everyone likes it. So probably the latter, even if the opinion doesn't go as far as "stinks."
I wouldn't say the paperboy stinks. I thought Macy Gray was fantastic, and Nicole Kidman was really good. The racial tension of the movie was palpable. It's based on real events, so there's some validity to the journalism/activist story. I'm not sold on the portrayal of all the pieces.
Give me an example of the distinction between “Everyone likes this movie except me” and “the movie people say this is a great movie, I think it stinks” if you think I'm off base.

I saw this on Prime the other night and seriously considered a rewatch. I've only seen it once and I thought it was intense with a good twist. This definitely makes me want to get back to it.

I agree, except for Midnight in Paris - which doesn’t feel like a Woody Allen movie at all - it is one of my top films.

They're very well written, but mainly appeal to what some commentators may refer to as an "urban elite" audience. Upper West Side or Upper East Side.
Definitely coastal, though...

Look, I watched it because it was recommended on multiple "what to watch" type threads. I'm clearly in the same camp you are. Why not just say "I didn't like it, either," instead of trying to say the movie that prompted the thread doesn't fit an OP's criteria?
Fact is, there are people here that like it. You don't. I don't. If we go off the concept that "Well, I didn't like it so it doesn't fit the criteria," than there would be no movies to discuss. Just back up for a second and remember that OTHER people like it and recommend it. Yeesh. Just discuss the topic instead of being a dick about semantics.

People, as in normal movie fans, love these movies, for my own reasons, they didn't resonate with me
For me, that would be Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, and No Country for Old Men. I'll expect downvotes, etc. Those were movies I watched with high expectations after a lot of hype, and was very disappointed. Other examples (not mine) usually include A Christmas Story and The Big Lebowski.

High on Rotten Tomatoes, the Academy loved it, etc.
For me, some recent examples would be Moonlight, where I legit fell asleep in the third act, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO, where I was eye rolling at what a bitch Frances McDormand was, but glad Sam Rockwell won an Oscar, because he stole the movie. However, I am still flummoxed at this movie winning 7 Oscars.
It seems like you are more in the former than the latter. For the purposes of this thread, I will say The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard with Jeremy Piven. I watched it after much praise from this board. I may have lol'd once. I'm pretty sure it was when the gospel choir sings "it's not even motherfricking Fresno". Also, The Invention of Lying. Once again, I was let down by this board's recommendation. I could handle the blatant attack on Christianity (isn't it sooo odd that this same type of movie doesn't exist for any other religion). However, this movie just wasn't funny. Truth telling doesn't mean that everyone has to be shallow and unempathetic. This board let me down.
