December 21, 1968.
Mission commander Frank Borman and fellow astronauts Jim Lovell and Bill Anders left the face of the earth on Saturn V's maiden human voyage. Their destination was the Moon. After a successful launch, Apollo 8 executed a burn that allowed them to leave earth orbit and on Christmas Eve they would broadcast to the world from lunar orbit.

Why didn't they wait to go until the summer when it's warmer?

Good stuff.
Longer piece, though there are others that are longer. Really a cool story, Apollo 8. They were behind and decided they needed something to keep the public interested.

That was so fascinating to me as a kid. They always broadcast the launches. Everyone would watch until they were safely in orbit. Then they always broadcast the reentry, and you would watch until they got them back to the aircraft carrier.
I was 9 years old when they did their Christmas Eve broadcast.
It was on of three moments of Apollo that standout in memory..
1. Christmas Eve, man was actually going around the moon in a spacecraft.
2. Neil Armstrong planting his foot on the surface of the moon.
3. Apollo 13 coming in for slashdown. No one thought they would get them back home.

I have wonderful memories of those times. My dad was one of the nerds in a white shirt and black tie chain smoking Camels at Mission Control that they’d show on TV.
