Talking heads were right - G5 doesn’t belong

I will still maintain that Tulane and JMU earned their playoff spots based on the current criteria, but the haters are correct. The group of 5 sucks arse

With the portal/ NIL I don’t think we’ll see a small program with a truly special team like Boise back in the day, Tulane a few years ago, UCF, etc. who have the horses to compete on a grand stage again

Probably correct. It takes a $20 million payroll to compete today. I don't see how a Tulane or JMU can fund at that level.

I do think a top 12 ranked G5 school should get in.

Agreed.
Like so many things, it sounds like a good idea, but critical thinking tells you it just isn't going to work.

Neither of those teams belonged in the playoffs, and there were a couple of teams who could have played a competitive game against Ole Miss/Oregon who didn't get the chance.

None of the teams that played today or yesterday “belong”.

Yeah. Tulane could get hot and play a perfect game and maybe pull an upset.

JMU is a step slow at every position, and it is brutally obvious that they just don't have the athletes and speed to compete at this level.

Final score won't show it because Oregon relaxed late in the game, but it could have been really embarrassing.

They should divide FBS into 2 halves and have 2 playoffs, and crown two national champs. The Tulanes, USM’s JMU’s and Boise States of the world will never win it if they have to go against the power 5 conferences.

Make it like the old days when it was Division 1AA. There are some pretty good teams at that level. Pit would be entertaining as hell, plus, it would be a cash cow for television.

They did, that is why the current criteria should be tweaked. Eliminate autobids and take the top 12 teams regardless of conference.

That's now known as FCS and nobody pays attention to them. Do any of y'all realize that Illinois State and Montana State are playing for the FCS National Champion on January 5, 2026? I'm sure that'll be watched by dozens.

Top 12 teams according to whom? The CFP voters? The subjective means of choosing the playoff teams must be removed.

You can't do that unless you blow up the traditional conferences and create divisions like the NFL.

If we use the old BCS method, it ends up being virtually the same as the CFP ends up with.

Small schools can no longer build a team. Tech's best receiver two years ago was the Ole Miss star receiver last year.

That is precisely what needs to happen.

"Traditional" conferences? Traditional conferences went out the window when West Coast teams joined the Big Ten and ACC conferences. Nothing screams "traditional" like Florida St. playing a conference game in Palo Alto or Southern Cal playing a conference game in New Jersey. That train has already left the station.

I would like to keep the SEC together. But that's just me.

You're not wrong about that train leaving the station, though. Still, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth by a lot of folks.

JMU did better than Tennessee did last year.

The CFB playoff selection criteria matches the current overall state of CFB - dysfunctional on many different levels.
