How many games back are we?

I may or may not have flapped my way over to GPT this morning with a pointed question…
Based on the standings as of mid-December 2025, the Western Conference has become extremely top-heavy, which is suppressing the win totals required for the bottom seeds.
The New Magic Number: 38-40 Wins
To secure the 10th seed this season, you likely only need to hover around or slightly below .500.
• Current 10th Seed: Utah Jazz (10-15 record,
.400 Win %)
• Current Pace for 10th: ~33 wins (if they maintain current win %)
• Projected "Safe" Threshold: 40 wins
Why the Bar is Lower This Season
In previous years, you needed 44+ wins because the conference was deep 1-11. This season, the
"wealth" is being hoarded at the top, leaving scraps for the middle.

The Jazz are 10th at 10-15 so we definitely are not out of it.

The Jazz will 100% tank, because they only keep their first round pick if it's in the top eight. Dallas will likely tank to try to get another high pick to start building around Cooper Flagg. The Clippers and Kings are total disasters. Our only real competition for the #10 slot is the Trailblazers.

I put down $100 on the Pels to make the play-in right before the game tonight at +4000.
Let’s goooooo!

Dallas will trade Davis and whoever doesn't fit in their Flagg timeline by the deadline.

Unfortunately, my bet was near the beginning of the season, when I put $50 on the Pels to win the SW division at +10000, lol. My bet isn't looking quite as good as yours.

The most optimal outlook: End the year going 4-3 (wins vs indy, Dallas, Chicago, and split Phoenix; losses to Cleveland, Phoenix, and nyk)
10-25 and you'll probably be 13th in the division and 4 games back.

Jazz will tank and Kings are done. We will pass them.
Clippers are old. I imagine we'll pass them by too. I still think it's hilarious that people thought the 2017 All Star team was going to be a good roster.
Mavs are interesting. Flagg is only going to improve and if Ruffles stays healthy (LOL) they could win some games.
Portland will fight.
It could get interesting for sure.

The biggest thing we have going for us is that we have no incentive to tank while some of the teams above use like Utah, Dallas, and Portland all have incentive to tank.
