Why do they have co coordinators. That seems like a terrible approach.

It’s basically just for resume purposes. A lot of schools have co-coordinators these days, but one person is in charge of actually calling the offense or defense.

It also can help get that certain coach more money. Years ago Tulane did it to help get a certain position coach more money. If they wanted to keep saying a WR coach for recruiting purposes it was an easier sell to the Ivory Tower that the coach was also a 'co-coordinator'. This is straight from a HC.

The head coach will design the offense and do the game planning anyway.

Yep, basically this and it also adds a layer if someone wants to try and take them away, they will have to commit more to it, and they can't upsell him on giving that title. It is like banks that have a million Vice Presidents. In the old days, they were called running game coordinator and passing game coordinator. Now, it's just co-coordinator. Very normal.

Tim Banks is a decent DC but an absolutely lousy safeties coach and recruiter
