I have always known about the fact that the scene where Lee is surrounded and cheered by literal thousands of Confederate soldiers in the movie Gettysburg was a spontaneous event that was not planned. That being said, it's always nice to finally see a video released where the filmmakers and actors talk about how it all went down:

And for those of you who have never seen that particular scene in full:

Here it is

Been reading through Shelby Foote's civil war trilogy and plan on watching this after i finish. I've never seen it. From the research i've done its the best civil war movie out there. I noticed they released a prequel to it in the early 2000s that was panned by critics.

It wasn't that great of a film nor was it a good adaptation of the source material. So much of the novel it was based on was thrown out of the film adaptation. It would have been better served as a miniseries. Ronald Maxwell, the film's director, wanted to make it something of a semi-autobiographical account of the life of Stonewall Jackson. In reality the novel the film was based on was so much more than that.

Despite the fake beards and slightly melodramatic dialogue, I absolutely love this movie. I have the Extended edition in all of it's 4+ hour glory!

I just got back from a work trip and was lucky enough to get to visit the actual battlefield at Gettysburg last Sunday. That was a truly amazing experience getting to see the actual terrain Pickett's charge took place on!! I highly recommend it!!

Gods and Generals, and it is as bad as advertised in my opinion. But watch Gettysburg for sure!!

Never seen this movie but that was a good scene.

The uniforms looked like they all just came in fresh from the cleaners. And rifles were clean and smooth.

Guess it's easy to forget how far films have come in terms of realism.

The prequel was fair to the Confederates and depicted a Southern victory. Can’t have that so the critics lined up like trained seals.

I love Gettysburg but sorry I thought Gods & Generals was trash in comparison.

Gods and Generals (as well as Last Full Measure and most of Shaara the Younger's books) cover multiple years, while Killer Angels covered 3 days. As you said, G&G should have been a mini series or multiple films.

It's been years since reading it, but iirc First Manassas isn't even covered from the battlefield, but from reports coming back to Richmond. In the theatrical cut it was the primary battle scene.

But not historically inaccurate either. Lee was loved to the point of deification by his rank and file soldiers (not so much by his corps commanders). There are several recorded incidents where Lee was too close to the front and the soldiers would lead Traveller to the rear to keep Lee from harms way. Also numerous times where the soldiers would press around him as he rode by to try to shake his hand or just run a hand along Traveller.

It was also just a poorly made film that should have been a miniseries. If you have read the novel you will know that there is a great story there. However, the film is very little like the novel it is based on.

Gettysburg was the better film for sure but the one scene in Gods & Generals where Jackson is on horseback addressing the 1st Va. Brigade gets my arm hairs standing like the Riders os Rohan speech outside the walls of Gondor.
