Does it have to be a Dunstan or will any hybrid work?

I’ve bought 20+ hybrids and planted at my place from Whitetail Hill Chestnuts. It’s located in north west AL.

I’ve been very pleased with them. They are all growing well and 2-3 years old now. I have tree tubes around them. I ordered them as bare root saplings.

here’s a did-you-know

chestnuts sell unshelled for about $4/lb, and once mature (12 years or so) can average 2000lbs per acre, per year (typically 30’ apart in rows). So an acre of producing chestnut trees “could” gross $8000/year in passive income. Multiply that by acres planted and it starts looking pretty good

Do these get real big like the ones that used to dominate the Eastern forests?

I've ordered sapling trees from ebay with pretty good success, they come bare root. They are pretty cheap if you buy them in small bundles, around $100 for 10.

History of Dunstan Chestnut

The old man passed away several years ago, but I used to buy a few pounds of chestnuts from them every year. I don't think they sell chestnuts on their site anymore, but they still offer trees. I mentioned in an earlier post that I saw some of these at Walmart last year in NW Louisiana. I bought a couple of their mulberry trees and was impressed by their size. This is probably the only time you will find me giving good reviews for trees at Walmart, but I felt like I was getting a bargain.

Go to WhiteTailHill’s website, and read up on the chestnut trees they sell. There’s a ton of info on them. They should grow where you are, but it depends on the soil. If you’ve got large hardwoods growing on your land, the chestnuts will too.

The hybrids they sell are actually Dunstan Chestnut trees. I just planted a couple this year, and plan to do some more next year.

Once a year, certain Walmarts get a shipment of dunstan chestnuts, various grafted persimmons, mulberry, and one or two other tree species from Whitetail Hill. I believe this is in April. You can look on their website and it will tell you which locations will receive them. College Drive was the only location around Baton Rouge.
