I have been playing a set of TM Rocketbladez for about 3 years. I bought them used for $300 from Edwin Watts. I am looking to upgrade to a new iron set and I am stuck on Takomo Irons right now simply because of the price and the look of them.

I am leaning towards the 101T's or the 201's which are forged, I have never played a forged iron so the 201's would be a big jump.

Looking for any insight, any reviews, good or bad experiences in the delivery processes?

My buddy has 101T's

I really like the way they feel and seem to be pretty forgiving, I have hit them a couple of times on par 3's. That's all I got! It sucks they don't do Demo's like sub 70

I went from mizuno MP-54 to the 101’s and really like them. I only play a few times a year now so I wanted something with more forgiveness. You can order a set and use the 7 iron and send them back if you don’t like them. I ordered the 101 and 101t’s at the same time.

How drastic was the club head size difference from the 101 to 101t? Was this a factor in you choosing the 101's?

I have the 101Ts, have had them for a couple years. I love them. Good feel. I upgraded from some 17 year old nike NDSs so I don't have alot to compare them too. For the price it was just right for me. I emailed them and told them I was an 18 handicap and asked which ones they would suggest I get. they came back and told me to get the 101Ts. I have since improved to like a 12 handicap. Also, I had an issue with my 9 iron after like a year. The metal plating on the head started to peel away on the bounce. They said they have never seen that before and shipped me another club within a few days. Never have had that issue again with any of the irons. It was kinda weird.

Yea I am leaning towards the 101T's also. The "forged feel" of the 201's seems nice but I feel as if I won't experience that pureness feel as much as someone else who is a better ball striker.

The 101t’s have a thinner top line and smaller face. They are about the same size as my mizunos were. I went with the 101’s since I play about 4-5 times a year and the misses were a lot better. A hybrid set would be nice but the lofts are different.

I played 4 times this year, twice around thanksgiving and shot 80 both times. The more forgiving club helps.

I don't like the fact that you can't hit them before you buy them and they only come with KBS shafts and lamkin grips. I know I can buy just the heads but then I'd have to buy the shafts, Dynamic Gold 105s, have them installed then pay for the grips, Golf Pride MCC+4, then after that, there's still a chance that I don't have the spin rate or length numbers I want and need. The heads only are $399, shafts + install $400, grips + install $100, that's $900 before I've taken one swing with them. I personally don't think it's worth the risk, now someone just starting out, the stock Takomo irons for $589 is not a bad idea.

I've never played a set of irons that were fitted to me in anyway. I have played standard sets my whole time playing. That said, their policy now is you can hit the 7 iron and see how you like it, if you don't like it you can return the whole set. My worry is not being able to be honest with myself and say "You can't hit these, return them" haha

I would recommend Maltby over Takomo. I have 101s that I played for a season. They are fine irons, nothing special. A little hot of the face at times but I think that's all hollow body. Also, the Takomo's are truly hollow, no foam filled like TaylorMade.

Maltby are every bit as forgiving with a forged iron and roughly in the same price range. Maltby is widely considered on of the best club designers int eh business. He's designed irons for all the major brands as well as the new Maxfli irons for Dicks.

You can find quite a few different ones on Golfworks. I would recommend the TS3.

Thanks for the new rabbit hole haha

I have never heard of Maltby and have been researching Takomo for a couple weeks now, so I need to dig a little deeper on these. I will say from first glance they look nice but the purchasing process seems to be a little less involved, doesn't look like I can pick from a list of shafts.

How often do you play? I'm a 7hcp and play 2 to 3 times a week during spring, summer and fall, very sparingly in the winter. I got fitted for the Mizuno 925 JPX Hot Metal Pro. I tried the 925 forged and I don't hit the center of the clubface enough and lose distance on off center shots where as the more forgiving clubs were better. My ego thought I could hit the forged but the numbers spoke for themselves. If you play regularly and are a descent player, hcp 15 or below, it would behoove you to get custom fitted for clubs, they help a lot. Now anyone, no matter what their ability should be fitted for lie, flex and club length, that's not being custom fitted to where you try numerous club head and shaft combo's. You should get fitted for lie, flex and length before you buy Takomo clubs, you can get that done at most golf shops. Takomo has a custom section to where you can add your specs.

Yes, this is exactly what I am doing. Right now the plan is get these specs and order the 101T's to those specs, The 101T's are hollow body and forgiving without the big bulky look of the 101's.

I did just get introduced to the Maltby's which have thrown a curveball at me because I've never heard of them but they seem to be similar to Takomo in price and quality.
