What was the reasoning on flying the planes to Tupelo before redirecting?

Was this really some kind of charade like we didn’t all know what was happening?
Did they originally plan to get the kiffins to Tupelo then scrap it?
Just curious. Surely they don’t think we’re all so dumb to not know both of those planes were headed for Oxford the entire time.

Kiffin mentioned having to turn around when he and Knox were being driven off the road. Sounded like they were driving to Tupelo and returned to Oxford so the flight diverted.
