People forget how much hatred Saban received...

... from the press when he left Miami after only two seasons. They fricking crucified him. What made it all go away? He won championships.
Just win baby.
Just win baby.

Embrace the hate. It’s fun being a villain

People are always going to hate you. You might as well make them hate you out of jealousy.

I mean, if Lane is at LSU for a decade and a half, then it's worth it.
Chances are though, he won't stay that long, whether that means he has success here and tries the NFL again or puts up Kelly numbers and is tarmac'd after 3-4 seasons.

i really don't see that happening... i really think he will emulate Saban and will be totally fine just being a great college coach....
Saban was a failure in the NFL, but is widely regarded as one of the best HCs in the history of the game, all b/c of just college coaching...

There is nothing that says Lane can stay in one place longterm.
He has also alluded to wanting another shot in the NFL.

no, i get that... and yeah, that's the fear with hiring Lane... but i just think he's tried the NFL, and it just not his thing... i could be wrong... but i think with a mentor like Saban, i could see him heeding the advice to remain in college, wherever that may be, vs. going to the NFL....

He alluded to it at least once this year when asked about it.

then maybe so... i'm not all that concerned about it, and who knows how much interest there really may end up being from NFL teams for him anyway... the NFL seems pretty set on promoting young, up and coming coordinators right now... it may swing back to hire the hottest college coach, eventually

from Nov. 2024:
But the Rebels head coach has no interest in returning to the NFL. He explained on The Herd with Colin Cowherd why he likes coaching at the college level over the NFL.
"I really enjoy where we're at, I really enjoy it," he said (4:00 mark). "Also, when you win, the thing that I don't like about the NFL is when you win, you kind of get punished. You draft last. When you win more in college, you're able to get better players because now they see, 'Man, i can go there and win championships, I can go there and beat Georgia.' We've spent a lot of time to get it up to this place, that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to me."

Winning championships helped, but I think the passage of time also went a long way toward the burying of history. Media/fan fury is about as fickle as their praise.

When Nick Saban left the Dolphins for Alabama, he had two conference championships and one national championship. Lame has 0 conference championships and 0 national championships.
