My 2020 F150 5.0 L V8 burns an abnormal amount of motor oil, especially when I hit the gas hard. 5W-20 is recommended for this model.

I did some research, and learned it is a common problem, and a factory defect. I took it to the dealership to see what they can do, and basically the mechanic recommended that I start using 10W-30. How will the truck perform, if I do that? I’ve never veered from what was recommended for my vehicles.

Stay at around 100 mph.

That’ll cut down on both your oil and your fuel consumption

It won't burn as much oil. Other than that you probably won't notice a difference, depending on the defect. You could see slightly worse gas mileage.

How many miles on it?

It won’t hurt anything mechanically. I’d switch and see what the outcome is.

6 year old truck has “loosened up” enough for that to not be a problem if you want to use a little thicker oil. You will not be able to notice a performance difference. You may however, get a little resistance from whoever changes your oil. Also be sure that it is not under any warranty, as that would void the warranty.

How much oil is it burning? Is there any soot in the tailpipes or blue smoke?

Bad advice. Stay with factory and answer my question OP.

Not even gonna debate with you on this. No offense.

It’s a lot. I check the dipstick whenever I think about it. I probably add 4-5 quarts of oil every 9000 for synthetic.

OK well wrong on checking the dipstick whenever. Do it regularly. I check mine 1x per week on the same day. You can monitor and troubleshoot any issues better.

That’s not bad for a certain amount of miles. How many miles on it?

ETA: ok you said already 112K

Do you find oil on the ground?
Blue smoke?
Or does it just get low?

No oil on the ground. I’ll start looking for soot now that you mentioned it.

Oh and your engine is engineered for that specific oil specs. There’s a reason for it. Don’t just use a different spec oil and say well let’s see what happens. Dumb.

Now on much older vehicles there was wiggle room. That’s not the case with a 2020 vehicle.

That’s good no oil on the ground.

Is your exhaust clear or not?

Ford changed to 5w30 in the newer 5.0’s. I’d switch to that but, it’s not going to help much if at all on your oil consumption.

As far as I know, it’s clear. There’s nothing noticeable.

None taken. Unless he is in a cold climate where the less viscous 5w makes a difference I’ll stick with my original advice.

What happens if oil is on the ground. What does that mean?

I have a 2012 F150 turbo w/ 167k and it’s starting to drip. I haven’t looked at it yet for something simple like oil plug but curious

2000 miles per quart is not really that. excessive.

Changing to 5W-30 would not hurt the engine but may help your consumption.

You also may have a problem in your engine.

I would have a competent and honest technician do some diagnostics on it. Won’t be free advice.
