The Trump administration announced on Thursday new oil drilling off the California and Florida coasts for the first time in decades, advancing a project that critics say could harm coastal communities and ecosystems, as President Donald Trump seeks to expand U.S. oil production.

The oil industry has been seeking access to new offshore areas, including Southern California and off the coast of Florida, as a way to boost U.S. energy security and jobs. The federal government has not allowed drilling in federal waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, which includes offshore Florida and part of offshore Alabama, since 1995, because of concerns about oil spills. California has some offshore oil rigs, but there has been no new leasing in federal waters since the mid-1980s.

Since taking office for a second time in January, Trump has systematically reversed former President Joe Biden’s focus on slowing climate change to pursue what the Republican calls U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. Trump, who recently called climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” created a National Energy Dominance Council and directed it to move quickly to drive up already record-high U.S. energy production, particularly fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas.

Doesn't matter, this will play great with the crowd that thinks we stopped drilling the past four years even though 2023 and then 2024 were the highest years on record for domestic oil production

Why don't you tell us why oil companies would want to drill where there is not any oil?

Supposedly there is. It will be interesting to see how this issue plays. Drilling of the FL coast is protected by law for up to 125 miles offshore.

And it isn't a left / right issue. Most people do not support the ban regardless of political affiliation.

I have the same question. I'd almost assure there is oil to be discovered off California. Question I have is, was it buried deeply enough to turn 16 API gravity oil to 35 API gravity?

Any geophysicists out there?

Why should drilling not be allowed off the coast of FL or CA, when it is for the coastlines of TX, LA, and MS? Time to open up new areas for drilling.

Better yet, why China is drilling horizontally to get at it...

Lots to unwrap.. but as always political clickbait comments to complex questions..

North Florida versus south are different. I have mapped every seismic line in south Florida.. some oil but small and main trend explored already .. ( black panthers love our pump houses fwiw) other similar subsurface structures tend to be tight and poor production.. we sold a resource play.. did not work.. company that drilled it did it over the holidays when no one was looking .. got chased out of the state..

Some people argue head toward Cuba??.. some argue step back from sunny land trend onshore more..

Bottom line politicians are idiots..

We could discuss California coast also.. there are rigs out there in the bay.. we have enclosed them so they look like towers .. structure…soundproof etc.. they look like little light house …

Again politicians are idiots..

So? Its federal land not state lands. Oil companies can be legally required to clean up any spills.

5 years ago taco extended the drilling moratorium in florida, gulf and atlantic, plus Georgia and south carolina.

Some California beaches are known for the tar balls that roll up from the "vents" that are seeping. Heck, even Maverick County Texas has billions of barrels of heavy oil in a formation known as the San Miguel Tar Sand.

BILLIONS of barrels!!

What lays below it some really wonder. Most highly pressurized nat gas well ever drilled in North America over a 24 hour period, for one.

But go ahead, drill baby drill, wherever needed and make real damn sure at least 4 more efficient refineries are built to handle the byproduct demand.
