Has a Major D1 Program coach ever taken another job before the end of the season?

I'm not talking like a Rutgers to Syracuse or Oregon State to Stanford, or going from college to the pros.

Also not talking a coordinator taking a HC job like Aranda in 2019 or an average coach going to a lesser school.

A top 10 team looking to go to another perennial top 20 team team and announcing before the season end.

Yes, Brian Kelly did it to come to LSU.

In the middle of a playoff year, no-less.

You’ll have to clarify, for the low IQ people in here, that you’re asking about end of Regular Season.

No other coach has had to make the decision with the early signing period and only transfer portal window being within a month of the season ending.

It’s a new game.

Brian Kelly
During rivalry week.
He then immediately left.

Lincoln Riley
The day after Oklahoma’s last regular season game still kinda counts.

Jimbo
Took the Texas A&M job before FSU played its last regular season game.

Taggart, Frost, Herman are other examples - but like others said - it’s a whole new ballgame and most after the season.

By that criteria so have many coaches that changed jobs. Including Nick Saban when he accepted the Miami job before LSU's bowl game.

Notre Dame's regular season was over when Kelly accepted the LSU. There was an outside chance they could still make the CFP, but it wasn't a certainty. They needed other things out of their control to fall into place make that happen. In fact, ND DID NOT make the CFP.

The parallel is Bill Frieder at Michigan (basketball) in 1989. He accepted the Arizona St. job before the NCAA Tournament. Upon announcing such, Bo Schembecler got pissed and told him to leave. Steve Fisher then coached Michigan to the National Championship.

Unlike ND in 2021, if the CFP started today, Ole Miss would be in. If they beat MSU next week they are in. Not, maybe in if things go their way in the championship games.

Brian Kelly didn't leave his playoff bound team.

VT just did. Before you say something. VT played for a National Championship in early 2000s

Well, some would say the bowl game is part of the season. So if that is your criteria, then there are several coaches who have taken a job "before the end of the season." In fact, at LSU alone, Hallman, Saban, Miles, and Kelly ALL took another job before the end of the season.

Sometimes, I don’t think people fully understand their own questions. Either that or they just get so excited to make a thread that they don’t even think about what they are asking.

Bowl games and playoffs are called postseason for a reason.

If you mean end of the regular season, the only example I can think of is Jimbo at A&M but that was unique because it was after everyone else's regular season ended, but A&M still had a make-up game against ULM on conference championship weekend. Jimbo took the A&M job after FSU played Florida.

If you're asking before the bowl games, yes it happens all the time. Honestly, it was more common than not. the period between the regular season and bowl games were when most coaches were fired/hired. The CFP, ESD, and the portal window has just added a wrinkle making the coaching carousel a shitshow. If none of that were a thing and Ole Miss was playing for a Sugar Bowl bid, no one would really be making as big a deal about the Kiffin situation.

Many believe the “season” includes bowl / playoffs, dumbass.

Example: first response in this thread pointing to BK

No. He left in mid January when basically no one was left for Tennessee to hire. That's how they ended up with Dooley

There was 0 chance they were making the playoffs. Their competition for the 4 spot was an undefeated team that beat them h2h
