I was just sitting talking to some friends and this is what I will say. Whatever coach we get needs to know how to recruit HIGH SCHOOL talent and develop them. A lot of people aren’t talking about how there is one portal window now. I think a lot of coaches will get exposed due to not being able to fix mistakes. You could grab a kid out of the portal and evaluate him. If he wasn’t what you thought, you had the spring to correct your mistake. This is gone so we need back to the basics competent coaches preaching physicality and development.

You'll get downvoted but you're right, the best coaches need to be able to do both. Filling gaps with the portal every year isn't good enough

I think the days of getting 25 guys out of HS and learning their names is gone.

5 to 15 HS guys will play and make their marks per class but the rest will be churn and burn.

The splashes are in the portal now. Get used to it, I’m sorry but it’s just the truth.

Portal guys are older, likely more developed and have more years of S&C under them.. but the trade off is more expensive to come.

Our new coach needs to be able to do both. I don't understand why people seem to think grabbing players from the portal is bad. Recruit from your local talent if they fit the image of your team, recruit from the portal if they fit the image of your team.

You're going to have to pay them either way. It's more about creating a complete roster given all the resources available.

Portal and JUCO gems are the way of the future, even if I hate it.

I think Lane will be fine at this.

He utilizes the portal at ole Miss because Ole Miss doesn’t have a stellar recruiting ground like LSU, Florida, Ohio State…..

What good does signing a HS kid actually do these days? Not only an they leave when they want but you basically have to recruit them every year to stay.... and pay them, correct?

There is only one portal window. If you don’t hit that first window, you’re left with a hole for an entire season. The portal isn’t completely gone. You will have to get those high school kids more now and develop them. You need someone to recruit and develop them. It isn’t talking about a specific coach just a observation

There will be less kids entering the portal with it being one window. Have you saw as many this year tweeting out they are hitting the portal? No because the chance of you not finding a home has increased. I just don’t think players will be so quick to leave now because of that. Unless you constantly hit in the portal, you will have to get these kids from high school.

Same. I wasn’t talking about Lane, just in general around football with that specific rule change.

They leave if they know they wont get playing time or theyre are coming from a smaller school.

In situation one, you're probably getting a dud like Gilbert. In situation two, its probably someone you passed over in recruiting either way. You still need to be able to reel in 5 star talent and develop them - this skill hasnt just gone by the way side, even if its slightly less important now than before.

Too many people are quick to say "none of that matters at all anymore" and thats just not true. You want guys like Pickett that show you can develop big time players from the jump, because then you hopefully have less holes to fill in. If you rely only on the portal, you need to fill every position every year.

Lol Dabo is just an idiot. He said that while knowing he needed a couple of transfers. I’m saying moving forward, probably for the next few years the portal will die down some. Not completely but some. Again there is only one window. You have to hit that one time. If you don’t, good luck. You’re going to have a couple of kids already on standby.
