Only "2 hours" but I would imagine it could get dicey.

US Hwy 50 is well-traveled and will be consistently maintained. Just need to check with their DOT to monitor any road conditions. If you're worried about it, just fly into Gunnison.

Had to drive from Denver to Crested Butte in January one year during a snow storm. could barely see the brake lights of the car in front of me while we inched along monarch pass. Don't want to do that again.

Also had to do it in a camry since the rental place didn't have any 4x4 vehicles.

What we have done in the past but gotdamn they are proud of the NOLA to Gunnisson airfare. Flying into Montrose (never thought I would say this) is much cheaper. However, tacking on the rental of a 4x4 pretty much makes it a wash so in the end I will probably fly into Gunnison.

I’ve done the drive before after a snowstorm cancelled my flights in Gunnison. It’s honestly not bad.

CO passed a law re: rental cars requiring snow equipment and it's the renter's responsibility to make sure the car is equipped. Don't remember the details so one should check if renting. Was just there last week but had personal vehicle that was legal so didn't pay too much attention

I just moved out of Colorado and highly recommend the CoTrip app, it's excellent. That portion of US 50 is easy even in winter.

I live in Montrose and this is correct. US 50 is well maintained so most of the time there is no issue. Of course there are sometimes exceptions and it’s a dicey drive.

We’ve always flown into gunnison and the drive has always been fine even with tons of snow. Only delay was one time during a cattle drive
