2027-28 season structure
The 2027-28 MLS regular season will begin in mid-to-late July 2027 and conclude with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup presented by Audi in late May 2028.
Like other major international leagues, MLS will observe a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, with no league matches scheduled in January.
Before the calendar change, MLS will stage a transition season from February to May 2027, featuring a 14-game regular season, playoffs, and MLS Cup. Those results will determine 2027 qualification for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup.

They are also discussing changing the two-conference structure. Will look into creating one league with 5 divisions.

No way they do it now with the USL getting out in front of it. Garber's ego wouldn't allow for it because it would look like the USL was dictating MLS' move to pro/rel.

So glad this is finally getting done. Also thrilled about the Apple deal moving to a less restrictive paywall. Not perfect, but better.

One possibly overlooked effect is aligning transfer windows with the majority of leagues around the world. This will help export American talent abroad imo.

Garber immensely cares that the USL still exists against his best efforts.

The 3four3 podcast was talking about this the other day.

The open system would be great for the overall quality of soccer in America but would eventually be the death sentence for many MLS franchises.

It would incentivize billionaire or other mega rich owners to buy lower level USL teams and build them up to knock out MLS franchises from top. The likes of DC, KC, Houston, Chicago, NE etc would either have to adapt and survive or waste away in lower league football.

Those NFL owners don’t want their tax write of closed system ticket fricked with.
