Was Sloan even the great QB coach everyone thought he was

I don't think he was.

I seriously doubt it. In his 2 offseasons here, JD5 went back to California to train with a guy there. That and the VR setup LSU had was the reason for it i believe.

Sloan was close to incompetent
Not qualified to call offense in the Catholic league.

I never understand how he could be seriously considered. He had one stop and that was LA Tech. I can’t even name a great LA Tech QB or offensive player recently. Don’t know how he was promoted after his resume.

BK didn’t want any new staff for fear of his incompetence being exposed.

I don't like Sloan as an OC but he actually does do some good things in the QB room. He is just a disaster as a play caller and he doesn't understand how to implement or install a creative/successful running game.
But in the QB room he does a lot of good things. Some people are just not meant to be a play caller and he is one of them.

JD5 gave little to no credit to Sloan and don't think they were on great terms after he left.

Yes he was....he just cannot call offensive plays

Well that certainly worked out the exact opposite way didn’t it?

apparently, none of our offensive coaches can because the playcalling was just as terrible Saturday

He turned Daniels from "run first", to a see the field and make a decision. If you can't see the difference between Daniels 1st year and 2nd year, that is your problem.
Nuss passed for over 4000 yds, one of only four QBs in the history of SEC.
Playing behind our lMatador" of an offensive line, is what caused Nuss' downfall.
Was play calling any better vs Alabama?

Apparently it's required to have an OL to develop a QB
And on that note "I know what a good offensive line looks like"
is in line with "you are all spoiled"

Alex Atkins isnt that great and even if he was there is no time for him to develop his own. Plus no analysts with playcalling experience at all. Brian Kelly did a terrible job of managing this team.

I think Jayden’s off-season qb coach gets most of the credit for his development
Kelly tried to take credit for it every chance he got by telling a story of how he kept telling Jayden he’s got to let it rip but….not buying it

No one thought he was, the only reason he had his position was Bryce underwood. After he decomitted we shouldve fired sloan

I tend to agree. There are a number of Superbowl winning QBs who started their career behind terrible O-lines only to be traded and win superbowls. Plunkett, Stafford, Brees, come to mind. Then, there are QBs who had great O-Lines and won a Super Bowl, but then wound up behind lesser quality O-Lines and could not make it back. Aikman, Montana, come to mind. Games are won in the trenches.

look, just because he wasn't good at calling plays doesn't mean he's not a bad coach in other areas
keep in mind, the head coach is in place to protect the OC and veto certain plays or make changes as warranted
obviously Kelly sucked at that part of the gameplan as well

He's a good quarterback coach and an excellent recruiter.
The issue is, he's the worst play caller I've ever seen.

Ok QB coach, but Denbrock was also here until ‘24. I give a lot of JD’s rise credit to Denbrock.

quote:Atkins isn't any better. We failed to score a single touchdown against Alabama Saturday for the first time in how many years? Was it the 21-0 NC game in 2012? Both Sloan and Atkins are working behind the 8 Ball though, trying to call plays with that "Legendary" OL in place. (Legedarily BAD at LSU)
he just cannot call offensive plays
