What’s the “magic number” for McMahon this year?

I’d venture to say where the league is currently you can pretty much expect 10 SEC teams to make the tournament.

Given recent history, I’m 50/50 on if the measuring stick for job on the line will be NCAA’s this year (though in year 4 it absolutely should be). I would guess LSU has to win at least 10 conference games for CMM to see 2026, especially in a year where 10 could get you in and 12 SEC wins locks you IMO.

There aren’t many things more satisfying than fielding a good enough team to be relevant in March.

Based on the governors actions, he may make the tourney and still get fired

He’s 14-40 career SEC He’s got to make the tournament. Any competent AD would have fired him after last season. I’m so happy Woodward is gone

McMahon is cooked unless we make a run to the sweet 16.

Im hoping for 6 conference wins. Would be way better than last season

Woody had too much pride. Felt like he had to keep McMahon to prove firing Wade wasn’t a blunder

10-8 would be a miracle & definitely enough to keep him around.

I don’t think the SEC will be as deep this year, but 6 SEC teams finished worse than 10-8 & made the NCAAT last year

I've been very anti-McMahon but this is fricking nonsense.

Be that as it may, it’s probably accurate.

There is a completely new administration now, in part, because the old administration refused to fire McMahon last season. The default is the new administration is planning to make a change at the end of the season. McMahon will have to have a remarkable season (likely making it to the second week of the NCAAT) to stave that off

You can want it to be but it's not. LSU has been to the Sweet 16 three times in the last 37 years. Sweet 16 might be the bar for Hubert Davis at UNC but not for any coach of LSU basketball.

I’m not saying that’s what I want. I’m just telling you what the powers that be who put in this new administration wants. They want to get rid of Woodward’s picks they see as failures.

This year he just needs to make the tourney. Losing in the first or second round doesn’t sink him. 9-9 or 10-8 in SEC probably gets you in.

While I generally agree with you, I think McMahon is far more likeable than BK was. He isn’t nearly as arrogant and doesn’t throw his players under the bus. Of course he still needs to win games this year and I think anything less than the tournament gets him canned. But if he wins 20 games and makes the tourney and then they fire him, I can’t imagine that being a very popular decision or making the job very attractive for any potential hires.

They want that because he has sucked. If he makes the second rd of the tourney then he's no longer sucking. If anything you'd see those people taking credit for the turnaround. Now would they fire him at the next best opportunity, probably. But our basketball program is in no shape to fire coach after tournament wins.

If he wins 7 or 8 sec games and wins all non conference games he should win, he gets another year.

That’s not a particularly good season. You’d be looking at something like a 17-15 record. After 4 years, that wouldn’t be reason to keep going. Particularly in this era of CBB where the roster is going to largely turnover again
