Thought I knew pretty much all the rules. I guess shame on me for not knowing that one?
I can’t recall that ever being called, and I feel like I’ve seen enough blocked kicks to witness a recover or two…
Am I alone in this?

Yes you are literally the only one.

Leon Lett did this where he tried to fall on a dead ball that was blocked and never possessed. That’s the only one I remember, but that that was way out in the open.

It was weird that it bounced off a helmet backwards into a crowd
It’s why they always say not to touch it

Have never seen this before. Team gets kicked blocked and keeps possession with new set of downs.

Yup. Thanksgiving day snow game.
It’s the rule, and this was the correct ruling on the saints. It sucks but that’s the rule. Don’t touch the ball after a block. That simple
The coaches need to teach the players these rules. That’s on them

Why is it okay then to return blocked kicks for scores?
Is it only okay if the block is recovered behind the LOS?
This seems like a very bizarre, “why?” rule

It was a scrimmage kick that went beyond the line of scrimmage. It is the same as a punt, another type of scrimmage kick. If the defense (receiving team) touches it without possessing it, then whoever recovers it takes possession with a new set of downs. Rare, since most blocked kicks remain behind the line of scrimmage, but the correct call.

It still should’ve been a turnover on downs though

Don’t let most of these fools think you crazy. I been watching the Saints since I was 7 years old in 1982. I’ve never seen silly shite like that. It’s 4th down, there was no clear recovery of the ball by Carolina & I don’t care which way the ball was tipped. It’s F’N dumb.

No, it’s the same as a punt that touches a defensive player beyond the line of scrimmage. Whoever recovers gets a new series of downs.

After the kick was blocked the ball hit a Panther on helmet.play should had been dead right there.

They need to change the rule accordingly.
Kicking team can try to run or pass but has to make the line to gain. That way the defense doesn't get screwed.

I just did a little bit of research and i, unfortunately cant see where they got the call wrong.
quote:
A scrimmage kick in American football is a punt, drop kick, or field goal attempt made by Team A during a scrimmage down, which occurs when the ball is snapped and the offensive team has possession before a change of possession.
It is distinct from a free kick, which includes kickoffs, safety kicks, and onside kicks, and is governed by different rules.
A scrimmage kick is legal only if it is executed by Team A in or behind the neutral zone before a change of possession.
The kick is considered to have crossed the neutral zone when it touches the ground, a player, an official, or anything beyond the neutral zone.
Once a scrimmage kick crosses the neutral zone, even partially, the ball belongs to the receiving team (Team B), and they may advance it.
If the kick does not cross the neutral zone—such as a blocked punt—it may be advanced by either team.
A scrimmage kick that is not recovered by either team belongs to the receiving team.
If the kick is jointly recovered by both teams, it belongs to the receiving team.
Scrimmage kicks are subject to specific formation rules. A scrimmage kick formation requires either at least one player 10 or more yards behind the neutral zone, or a potential holder and kicker positioned seven or more yards behind the neutral zone in preparation for a place kick, with the intent to kick being obvious.
If Team A is in a scrimmage kick formation at the snap, all actions during the down are considered part of that formation.
The kicking team must adhere to positioning rules during a scrimmage kick. Players must be behind the ball and inbounds, with at least four players on each side of the kicker, and all players must be between the hash marks after the ready-for-play signal.
Any violation of these rules results in a penalty, typically five yards from the previous spot.
Scrimmage kicks are also subject to various penalties, including illegal formation, illegal motion, false start, and holding.
Additionally, if a player from the kicking team touches the ball before it has crossed the neutral zone or been touched by the receiving team, it constitutes illegal touching, which gives the receiving team the option to take possession at the spot of the violation.
