Why is the peanut punch legal in football?

I’m not making excuses for Sharpe last night, but I’ve never understood how this is legal to do. A lot of times guys throw a punch and miss the ball striking the player. If a guy throws a punch at a player he is supposed to be ejected, so it seems strange that doing the same thing would be okay if you are aiming at the ball.

Peanut Punch is awesome. You're barking up the wrong tree.

I’m not really for or against it. It just seems strange that it would be legal. As long as it is I certainly understand using it.

I preferred peanuts in my Cream Soda.

Similar to an offensive player being able to initiate helmet to helmet

Which is another thing I don’t get. If they are truly worried about player safety, an offensive player using his helmet as a battering ram would be a penalty too.

It’s a football play. And it hurts like frick if you miss the ball.

Or how about our runners/receivers protect the ball better?

The last thing college football needs are more illegalities. There’s enough official interference as is. Punching at a ball is OK. Punching at a face, or a player without a ball is not. Should be pretty easy to determine.

He had three guys in front of him and was completely unaware of the defender coming in for the punch. Considering he fumbles at a 50% clip when he actually catches the fricking ball, I saw no reason why he shouldn't have given himself up when he got a nice chunk play.
I have no idea why you think that play should be illegal. Its beautiful when executed and has no safety risks that can justify preventing it.

Rules are so geared for offenses now. Let the defense at least have one thing.
