New research into a popular sleeping aid has some scientists worried about long-term usage. An analysis of adults with insomnia, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, has found that people prescribed melatonin for more than a year are at greater risk of heart issues.

quote:

Among more than 130,000 adults across multiple countries, those who were prescribed melatonin long-term had an 89 percent higher risk of heart failure over five years, and were twice as likely to die from any cause, compared with those not prescribed melatonin.

The findings are preliminary and don't change current health recommendations. They do not necessarily mean that melatonin – the fourth most popular natural product taken by adults in the US – is causing dangerous repercussions.

That seems pretty alarming... I wonder why recommendations wouldn't be better tailored with such findings?

Correlation =\= causation.

I assume the heart disease is actually connected to people with sleeping disorders.

There are a lot of limitations and confounding variables to the study. It was also done in doses much higher than recommended.

Not peer reviewed yet. Plus, there would probably have to be at least a couple of other follow up studies that are peer reviewed.

Yes. Thus the words may be linked.

Probably true. But both groups had insomnia.

Looks like this particular study was exploratory in nature. Hopefully this preliminary research will lead to more refined and better controlled studies

I think it is much more likely that poor sleep is linked to heart disease and people who are poor sleepers take melatonin. It’s a correlation vs causation thing. But what do I know I’m not a dipshit scientist like these guys.
