The founding fathers started this country in response to overburdening tariffs from the British crown.

I just think it’s ironic that we are implementing blanket tariffs based on unproven economic policy. There may appear to be benefits in the short term, but beware of the long term ramifications of economic bullies and alienating trading partners. See the Revolutionary War as an example.

I also remind the board American manufacturing is not what it was in the early-to-mid 20th century. We have become a services economy (80% of GDP) and may reap negative effects by alienating manufacturing “super powers” that most Americans may not even realize we rely so heavily on.

Taxation without representation was the gripe, not necessarily tariffs. We relied heavily on tariffs back in the day before we were punished for acheivement with burdensome taxes

His solution is to keep doing exactly what we have been doing for the past 50 years which caused us to get into $37 trillion debt.

This genius who started this thread thinks that we can magically start reducing our debt by staying on the exact same course as always

I vote to make people that aren’t like me suffer

I’m tired of paying for the whole world. It’s time to make someone else pay for something for a change. This is what I voted for

I have always advocated for targeted production subsidies, implemented through direct government payments or incentives to domestic industries to boost their output and competitiveness.

Top industries that would benefit:

1. Semiconductors
2. Electric vehicle batteries
3. Renewable energy equipment (solar panels, wind turbines)
4. Biopharmaceuticals
5. Advanced aerospace

And then promptly implemented many of their own in order to pay off the debts they incurred in defeating the British.

Subsidizing massive corporations.

You might eventually figure it out.

Funny you mention that, because Trump 1 signed into law several initiatives that funnelled billions in taxpayer-funded subsidies, loans, tax breaks, and relief programs to massive corporations.

I don’t disagree with the subsidies in principal, as long as they target the right industries and are temporary.

The baws here bitch about China subsidizing industry but we do it far worse. We also subsidize industry, but only certain ones. We pick the winners and losers and let the others fall alone.

China has nothing on us. We recently paid this chip company 6 billion to relocate to arizona, and we retooled US automakers (the big ones) factories for them to the tune of billions of dollars.

At least the Chinese get cheaper prices, we get higher prices and deeper in debt.

Then go back and live that kind of lifestyle, like they did the first 160 years Forrest.

By golly, you've identified the psychological difference between receiving tariff revenue, and paying it.

BRILLIANT!

You may have had a brain aneurysm.
