As the deadline was minutes away, the Saints dealt Penning for a bag of peanuts. A late Day 3 pick in two years was the price to peel away Penning. That certainly seems more about the Saints attitude towards the former first round pick than it was the offer on the table. Still, it's something.

The 2026 Draft will be huge for the Saints, who are clearly a rebuilding team. New Orleans needs to load up on picks so that it can stack young talent and eventually return to being a competitive team. With eight current picks in next year’s draft, the first step of that process is off to a great start.
Of course, a rebuild is usually a multi-year process, and it’s always great to add young talent, so adding draft picks in future drafts is important as well. That’s what New Orleans did by sending Penning to the offensive line-needy Chargers for a 2027 sixth-round pick. Here’s a look at how the Saints' picks are currently shaping up for that draft.

Round 3 (Saints)
Round 4 (Saints)
Round 5 (Saints)
Round 6 (Chargers)
The picks in the 2027 Draft, which will surely change by the time it’s actually time to make selections, is relatively thin right now for New Orleans. The Saints posses their first five picks, and now have a sixth rounder thanks to the Penning trade. However, New Orleans gave up its original 2027 six for wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, and their seventh for Davaughn Vele.

That assumes we get a 4th round comp pick for Adebo next year. Not definite.

I don't see a comp pick on the list

Not too bad considering our 1st will likely be a top 1-5.

Shough balls out and we get a top 2 selection still. Best case scenario. We need to find ways to lose!

Did the Saints have two 4th round picks before the Vele trade? If not, then this list needs to remove the Saints 2026 4th round pick

yea, saints 4th to Denver.
We don't have any other 4ths aside from now Seattle's.

If Yaidom plays a certain amount of snaps on defense this season. Then we will not get that fourth rounder.
But Quincy Riley has been getting more playing time because Yaidom wasn't exactly tearing it up out there so think it's possible but I don't know how many snaps he's already played this season.

Loomis going to package all of 2026 picks to move up from #2 to #1 then draft someone projected to be drafted at 15-20.

My hope is that we trade down slightly in the 2nd round. We will likely be in the 33rd-36th range. Those are very valuable spots. If we traded down to 37-42 while picking up a few extra picks, it seems like a no-brainer.
I could be convinced from trading slightly down in the 1st round but less willing to do that bc we need some blue chip talent badly.

My hope is that ML move up in the organization and hires a new GM WHO KNOWS FOOTBALL TALENT,not athletics.

If there was ever a year to trade down with the #1 overall this is it.
No clear franchise QB on the board (which of course means we have less opportunity to find a trade partner), we need help across the board, more rookies/ = more cap space, and most importantly, with 4-5 picks as opposed to one, less chance for Loomis to completely whiff on the selection(s).
