Interesting read on his thoughts. I think he’s spot on.

It boils down to this:

at LSU, you don’t just coach a team. You become part of something that lives forever. This is a place where football isn’t a sport. It’s an identity. It’s family. It’s faith. It’s Saturday night under the lights with a hundred thousand people who believe in the same thing. This is LSU. And here, good enough has never been good enough.

Mostly, I like that it’s not just throwing names at the wall. He’s reflecting on the qualities the new coach needs to be successful here

Wax poetic all you want, there’s nothing different you really need to do here vs. any other school to win. I hate how people think you need this love in your heart for the culture or any of that shite to win at LSU.
Kelly failed here because he decided this era of college football wasn’t for him but with so much guaranteed money, he wasn’t going to walk away so he half assed retired.

I tend to agree with this.

I don't think this is a prerequisite for the job...but as Kelly showed us, if you DON'T embrace this culture, the fans will turn on you in a heartbeat when it starts to go south on you.

I'm warming up to the idea of Kelvin Sheppard.
It's high risk high reward but he would bleed purple and gold and have some dawgs on both side of the ball.
I think he would get Tiger Stadium roaring again.

Is his #1 guy still Brent Key?

Exactly
Can’t blame the man for that amount of money

I don't blame Brian Kelly for his shortcomings at LSU; I hold the person who hired him responsible for not properly conveying what LSU means to the state of Louisiana. When LSU loses, it negatively impacts our entire week. Many of us find it difficult to watch ESPN or go to work without feeling angry, hoping that no one will mention LSU. I experienced this for many years in the military, where I met people from various places who took pride in their state colleges. Scott should have explained how to keep 100,000 fans in the stadium engaged and interested. The key is winning and performing well every Saturday. Our state has limited resources and considerable financial investment, but one thing we all share is our pride in LSU.

Agree with all of it except it's a faith. Talk about setting yourself up for lots of negative mindsets if your faith is in a sports team.

Just like any job where you are the top person you have to be fully bought in. Being bought into the culture isn't nearly as important as being bought into the program. A coach that is fully bought into the program the culture stuff will easily follow.

If you give a guy the LSU job that hasn’t been a coordinator more than a year or a coach over 5. I never wanna hear anybody complain about an LSU loss.
Also, hope they could sell this move with the season ticket price increase and another parking pass increase on the way.

I think he’s not really saying you have to have “this love in your heart,” etc. He’s saying you have to understand that this place ain’t like other places. Quite frankly, Louisiana is more different than any other state. Parishes instead of counties. Its own language (yes, Cajun French is different from French), music, culture, etc.
Additionally, you have to embrace those differences because it makes a difference when you recruit here. It’s what makes Ed O and Frank Wilson and even Nick Saban effective recruiters in the state. They understand the dynamics involved.
It’s been stated ad nauseum, but this state is the only one in the south that only has one major university in a talent rich state. Outside of some so-called blue-bloods, LSU is probably the most demanding, but rewarding college coaching jobs at present.
Just have to embrace and accept that and be prepared and genuine in your dealings with the people. We all see what happens when you get in front of the press corps and say the same thing week after week (Kelly). Or when you put on a fake accent. Or grind on recruits. No one can respect that and it’s easy to see that person as an outsider. But even outsiders who stay true to who they are, like Miles and Saban, can be embraced and even loved.
It all depends on the team you put out there week after week. And there’s nothing a Louisiana fan base hates more than a “soft” team.

Don’t know. As I said, the article isn’t about candidates. It’s about the TYPE of person and personality that a coach needs to be successful at LSU, which he believes is different than other coaching jobs in college

In 1 more week, he will have coached more than 50% of his 1st year at DC.

I’m sorry, but I think if you’re getting paid $10 million a year, you should do your own research and know beforehand what you’re getting into.
He knew the expectations. He should’ve asked questions.
That in itself shows a lack of preparation and attention to detail. Now we know why and how he failed. It was a foregone conclusion

Unfortunately, it’s kinda true. Maybe overblown a bit. Some fans are kinda like that Roll Tide Willie guy that live and die LSU football. Up North and in some other areas, it’s like that for people with their professional teams. See Green Bay, Pittsburgh, etc.

Exactly. You don’t have to look any further than Saban and Miles

The fans will turn on you when you lose, that’s it.
He would not have been given more grace had he embraced the culture

Saban didn’t buy into the culture. He changed it.
DiNardo bought in, “bring back the magic!” but his arse was out as soon he started losing. Ed all about the “culture” then out on his as
Buying in is not necessary, winning is the only thing that matters.
Can it help you from a PR perspective at times ? Sure but it’s not a necessary component of the job
