Ladder stand safety, security

I don’t love ratchet straps. Does anyone use chains instead of straps on ladder stands? If so, how are you attaching the chain to the stand and how are you tightening it? Turnbuckle, binder?

I have used ratchet straps for 20+ years never had an issue just check them before each season

I use chain and binder. I just release the binder and leave the chain loose around the tree. That way the tree doesn’t grow into the chain or stand

Dumb question, but how do you climb up and re-tighten with it loose at the beginning of the season? Keep a rope tied in the off-season? Tip toe?

I’ve never had an issue either, but having a young son climbing in them has me thinking of ways to stack the odds in my favor.

I have used ratchet straps without issue. But like a poster said, check them. My father in law had his ratchet strap break on him and they had not checked them.

Change them out every year. I buy the cheap ones and change out every year.

Wven better. Once stand grows in tree its never going anywhere

It isn’t that loose. Chain with a shackle on one side of the tree then another shackle on the other side with an extra 6” or so of chain between the shackles. The binder is used to remove the extra slack. The extra chain allows the tree to move and grow after season, but the slack is still enough for the stand to not move too much when getting ready again the next year.

Ratchet straps are fine. Loosen them up after every season so the stand isn’t put in a bind the entire off season. You can probably get more life out of the straps if you take them off (safely).

My Dad always did chains with turn buckles. I had to chisel a few out for him over the years. As previously said they will absolutely grow into the tree if not adjusted every other year or so.

I’ve got an old Skeeter Wilson stand that uses a porch swing chain to tighten up. The tightening bolt is built in. Really great design.
When putting stand up, take a long ratchet strap and attach ladder to tree about mid way. If a strap scares you, then use two.

I use the ratchet straps but also add a 6” piece of metal pipe hanger strap wrapped around each side of the stand and run a deck screw through it into the tree. Also keeps the stand from moving around.

Trees grow. That pops straps

You have good taste! I have one Wilson ladder and it is the GOAT! Wish I had 10 more. That’s what made me start thinking about using chains on the rest of my ladders.

I also just use ratchet straps. But I buy nicer/heavier duty ratchet straps than the ones that come with the stand and I use 3 or 4 per stand. It’s probably overkill but it gives me peace of mind.
