Just an interesting idea here with a shitload of incentives for pay for performance. A coach would pull almost $20M/yr in a title year

It would be an interesting concept and may just attract the mercenary assassin coach we are looking for lol.

I don’t see any of the big guys leaving their current program for that type of contract, but maybe that’s a good thing

This is what im thinking. We have a chance to lead the way here.

Same with NIL contracts. We'll pay you well for performance. But, if you transfer before 3 years, you have to pay it back.

It should be that way but with the numbers he suggested they still make big money for just getting to the playoffs.

kind of ironic that LSU started all this mess with the Saban contract

NIL contracts can’t be performance based from how I understand it since they aren’t paying for their services as a player but rather as a celebrity type figure for marketing etc.

Now the rev share… that may be possible since it’s from the school directly.

Maybe any lawyers here can comment.

Coach would lose his mind if LSU was screwed out a playoff spot. That would be a 5 million dollar hit!

yeah it’d be just as expensive if coach has a playoff run but at least you’d have a coach incentivized to more than double his salary with a championship once making the playoff. I think we have enough donors that would be happy to pool $20M for each title. They don’t come that often here right

Why wouldn't they? Kirby is the highest paid coach in CFB right now at 13 million a year. With this contract it would only take 10 wins a year to get to 11 mil which is more than Sark and Lanning. Hypothetically if the new coach earns a bye he could earn 13 million in his first season without winning a playoff game. It took Kirby 9 years and 2 national championships to get a contract like that.

I'm pretty sure all of the big name coaches are confident they could win 10 games a year at LSU with the resources available. Heck we even avoided having to play Bama and UF every year.

I think any coach that has confidence in themselves — which would be any coach worth a damn — would like a contract like that. I think the fans would like it too.

Kirby gets paid 13M regardless if his team goes 6-6, 8-4, or 12-0.

He doesn’t need to come to LSU & “maybe” make that

LOL
Any decent agent/coach will laugh at this. They are already laughing and Landry.

lol

Every single HC of note or agent says "No"

So you have to go for a diamond in the rough. As soon as that guy is successful, he will go somewhere that gives him a guaranteed contract

If you want LSU to become Tulane this is how you do it. Either every big school does this, or none of them do it

Maybe. Or they could just get guaranteed money like it is now. Which would you prefer? You are lying if you say you'd prefer 4-5 million guaranteed with the possibility of making 13-15 vs 10 million+ guaranteed with the possibility of still making 13-15.

the structure in OP isn’t a possibility of making 13-15, it’s the possibility of making $21M in a year. Not worth it for someone with a contract like Kirby’s currently but we were never expecting Kirby

Interesting idea but I think the base would need to be larger and the incentive pay less than suggested. Soon there will be 16 playoff teams and if you don’t make the big dance, it would be considered underperforming by the top 30 or so programs.

The only way this proposal had any chance would be if the top program in America would have done that when Nick retired. The only way.
