Why are people allowed to not carry/cancel insurance? And why do police not confirm this?

Property I own had a fence plowed through by a drunk driver. Officer on scene said he had insurance and it would be in the police report. Got the report today, and called the insurance listed. No record of the driver/the address/the car, nothing.

Called the police to ask and yes, they do have the ability to confirm insurance from the car computer, but often times do not. Guy spent one night in jail and then was released. Waiting for the officer to call me back, I hope they will add charges to him if nothing else.

Called my insurance and they said he likely got insurance to get the cards, then cancelled. Why is this allowed?

Cost to fix is likely about the same as my deductible, so I'm stuck paying for something that someone else broke.

If you sold your car, would you cancel the insurance?

Cops have had the ability to confirm insurance in real-time for years. You likely are the victim of a shite cop and/or a shite department.

For example, if you get in a crash in Louisiana, you'd better hope someone other than BRPD or NOPD show up.

In Louisiana there’s a process to have someone’s license suspended until they pay the damages they caused while uninsured. Perhaps there’s something similarly available to you in another state.

I mean, if he made the first payment up front for the insurance then cancelled there's not much the insurance company can do. Aside from requiring a larger payment up front for a longer period of time (say, paying for a year at a time) there's not a whole lot the insurance company can do to not allow him to cancel/stop paying. And most people are not going to be able to afford that.

That said, assuming you're talking about Kentucky, police do dick to enforce that shite here. We had some idiot take out our mailbox and the neighbor's a couple years ago and I was able to get the plate as they drove off. Called and they weren't willing to do anything about it.

It’s absolutely the cop being lazy.

Same thing happened to me. Some bitch from Texas rear ended me. She looked high and I smelled weed. Cop came and got all the info, did nothing about the weed smell.
Next day I found out that sure enough, she cancelled her The General policy shortly after getting the card.

Prison is needed for the these people.

Low lifes will go get an insurance policy and make the first month's payment so they can get an insurance card. Then when the bill for the next month comes, they just ignore it and the insurance company cancels the policy for non-payment.

Trashy people do this when they need an inspection sticker, renew a license plate, drivers license, or some other issue that they can't get done without being able to show proof of insurance. Once they get whatever issue taken care of, they just let the insurance lapse.

They're still breaking the law if they let their insurance lapse.

If you have the time and can figure out how to file a lawsuit yourself without needing to pay a lawyer, go file a suit against him in small claims court. Sure the money probably won't be much, but I'd do it on principal alone to not let that POS get away with it.

My daughter got hit head on by some Honduran lady last year. Totaled the car and PO on the scene said she had insurance. Per the report, Honduran lady was at fault. Got things rolling with my insurer only to find that Honduran bitch didn’t have valid insurance.

Why does their insurance cover your property and why are they required by the government to have insurance that covers something outside their possession?

Do you think trash really says, “my license is suspended. I better not get behind the wheel”???

Yep, the sheriff's office confirmed this and it makes me mad because he would know while the car and the guy were still on scene and at least hit him with additional charges.

Maybe the laws should state, if you go to cancel insurance on a car, you have to show proof that you no longer have the car or show proof you got insurance elsewhere, and simply can't drop coverage on a car you still own.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I always believed that the police VERIFIED you had insurance when they took your license and proof of insurance back to their cruiser. I thought they plugged in your policy number and could access a database to confirm it's legit and valid.

Hell, anyone could type up and print a fake "insurance card". That means nothing.

yeah, but in Louisiana the DMV is notified and you are flagged in the system as uninsured. You'll accrue fines each month you go uninsured. Next time you hit the dmv for something it's all gonna rear it's head.
