Time to Nuke the Filibuster

I’ve always said the 60 vote threshold in the Senate goes against what the Founders intended. But if there’s ever a time to bypass the filibuster, it’s now.
Per Bessent, the Schumer Shutdown is starting to have an effect on the economy. And if we get to November with millions of people not having their precious food stamps, we could see George Floyd level looting. Honestly, I think the Democrats want that to happen.
Screw the “optics” and just do what’s right for the country. No real American is going to be upset that you broke a made-up Senate rule.

Opening the govt to appease a bunch of lazy twits isn't the way to go. If anything, it puts Dems in a position to be the bad guy.

I say this every time it comes up but the filibuster isn't the problem. It's the easy filibuster where they just count the votes. If they have to hold the floor indefinitely like intended the filibuster is returned to its place as a measure of extreme last resort. They're way too lazy for an old-school Huey Long filibuster.

please explain why a 60 vote threshold is a good thing. If you’re argument is, “well what happens when the Dems are in charge”, then i’d say elections have consequences.

It's their rule. The term didn't gain common usage until the 1830s, before that it was called "talking a bill to death". But it's as old the Senate. Older really. It was used regularly in the Roman Senate.

A 60 vote majority is in place to prevent democratic tyranny against a minority party.
When it comes to the government being able to make changes, then it should be forced to be slow and measured and needing 60 votes is critical to preventing huge swings in power.
The more speed bumps a government has, the better it is for the people.
None of the current debates on SNAP would even be happening if the system wasnt set up this way.

60 votes is to help thwart country becoming a democracy vs a Republic. Simple 51 vote count on everything would have a bad long term impact

Exactly. The current administration/GOP has spent the last ~12 months putting a thumb in the left’s eye at every possible opportunity. You’re delusional if you don’t think the filibuster gets nuked day 1 of a 51 seat democrat senate. “Norms” mean nothing in this political landscape.
Moreover, if the current talking points are to be believed, what chance do the democrats even have of sniffing a congressional majority within the next generation? If:
- they’re losing millions of illegal voters due to deportations
- they’re losing any other avenues of election rigging due to this election integrity commission
- maybe most importantly, they’re hugely unpopular and seen as weak
What’s there to worry about? Nuke the filibuster, re-open the government, and start fast-tracking all the changes that will deliver us to a golden age
