Louisiana state Rep. Julie Emerson, R-Carencro, announced Monday that she is running for the U.S. Senate, giving Sen. Bill Cassidy another prominent challenger.

Emerson, 37, is chair of the influential House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees legislation concerning taxes and major state construction projects.

She sponsored several prominent bills in recent sessions, including flattening the corporate income tax rate, ending the corporate franchise tax, and creating LA GATOR, a program backed by Gov. Jeff Landry that gives parents money to help pay for private school.

She also sponsored the legislation that moved Louisiana to a closed party primary system
, in which the Republican and Democratic candidates compete for their party's nomination before the general election. Previously, all candidates, regardless of party, competed in an open primary election.

Emerson emphasized her legislative record in her announcement, saying "our country doesn't need more ineffective legislative outrage."

“Voters want a strong conservative senator who can get things done — someone focused on results, not rhetoric," she said in a news release. "I’m running to bring home real outcomes for Louisiana: infrastructure investment, new jobs, and a seat at the table where decisions get made.”

Emerson joins a crowded field of Republicans in the race. Many political observers believe Cassidy is vulnerable because of his vote to convict President Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial over the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol.

State Treasurer John Fleming, State Sen. Blake Miguez, R-Lafayette, Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta and St. Tammany Parish Council member Kathy Seiden have all announced campaigns.

Pretty sure this is the candidate Gov. Landry Camp will be backing and supporting.

I wonder if they'll be able to get Donald Trump, Jr. to come down and campaign for her in the primary. That could give her some momentum.

If we keep splitting the Republican vote with all these candidates, Cassidy will get the nomination again. I will vote Democrat if I have to in order to make sure he doesn't go back to Washington again, but I really don't want to.

He can't win the primary without 50% +1.

So it shouldn't matter if we have five or six GOP candidates at the beginning, as long as the anti-Cassidy vote in the primary runoff all shows up to the polls and pulls the lever for whichever challenger makes it out of the first closed primary round.

I believe she said early on she would run if Julia Letlow did not.

I know her personally and I can say she would be 1000000 X’s better for Louisiana than the swamp creature we have now.

I agree. We now have three GOP candidates who are conservative and would all be better than Cassidy.

I do worry that Julie:

1 - Doesn't seem to have a single mean bone in her body. I feel like you gotta have one or two dealing with that D.C. swamp.

2 - She's 37, and politics has pretty much been her career. While I personally believe every single D.C. politician upon reaching 80 years old should be sent home, I would also like to see someone like her get a little more real life experience.

Julie would make Louisiana proud, but she has time, and has been good in the State Legislature. Not sure why the rush...other than we know there's certain segments pushing her. Again, that makes me worried about #1 above.

That's why the Cassidy war chest is also paying for other's campaigns.

Surely, Trump is interested in seeing Cassidy not reelected and will endorse one of his opponents.

I’ve gotten to know Julie from a lot of political events. She’s got my vote. Funny, humble, supports the local down ballot candidates, and votes the way I want her to vote. Can’t ask for much more than that.

I think she’s running now because landry is the governor and he supports her 100%. She’ll use his current position of power and donors to make it a good contest.

I haven't heard anything about this.

It sounds like a good idea but not conservative at all. Will someone please explain this to me like I have a low credit score and can hear a beeping smoke detector as I type this?

I heard Julie Letlow was also going to run.

Wondering if that will still happen.

I’ll vote for any Republican that goes against him. He made an error by voting to impeach and we won’t forget.
