I would really like to have an intelligent discussion on WHY Jon Gruden WOULD or WOULD NOT be a great hire for our coach. Opinions on both sides will be taken into consideration. Serious discussions only.

In 3...2...1.....

It's far less funny and cute this time around. Same with Del Rio. Just clogging up the boards and it's beyond annoying.

- has never been even a coordinator in college.
- hasn’t coached in college since 1991 (one season)
- wasn’t even a good coach in his waning years in the NFL
- public perception is that he was fired for racism. Won’t go well with recruits and their families.

This. I posted this in another thread. Gruden will *NEVER* have another locker loom accept him because of the email scandal. Some things you just can't write checks for, there's no way back from that.

Good points. Thank you. Although, in today's college football landscape, in my opinion, it's about the $$$ not what someone said in a text. Anybody else have pros or cons?

That was the entirety of my point...some things money can't buy. Do you not think other schools would use that to steer recruits away from whatever school he represents? And can you imagine if a black player actually signed with him? He'd be taken to the woodshed on social media. Unless LSU was offering double NIL money, which we know ain't gonna happen.

Even mentioning his name in a search would be an abysmal failure on any administration's part. It just is what it is.

Negative recruiting by other teams has going on for a very long time. Kids today care about $$$ and getting to the NFL.

Does anyone here know exactly what was in those emails? From what I have researched, he never used the "N" word and was more of a joke than anything racist.

Tampa took down his name from there Ring of Honor after the scandal but ultimately put it back up. If what he said was truly racist, do think Tampa would have done that?

I agree with everything you said in your reply.

But the fact remains: whether the rumors were true, false, or exaggerated...it will hurt his ability to recruit, and retain, talent. Perception IS reality, especially to young men who thrive on the adulation that comes with recruiting.

At a minimum he's worth a decade of playoff potential, he can scheme against Kiffin, Smart, Deboer, our biggest problem with be having to higher coordinators after they get farmed out. It's so obvious, low ball contract with big incentive numbers. How are the pearl clutchers getting in the way of this.

The perception, the perception is current NFL players are willing to sit down and listen to what he has to say, while armchair activists talk about e-mails. Daniels, Winston, Penix, Gonzalez, Brown Jr., David, Waller, Witherspoon, Jacobs, Young, Burfict, all willing to have a dialogue, former players, super bowl champ. Bring his kid in for strength and conditioning, it's so fing obvious.

Gruden will be dead and buried and Rantards will still be trying to hire him.

Exactly. Have the due diligence and ask around and get a feel for what players and other coaches have about him. Just saying NO is ridiculous.

I'm an armchair activist? OK, I'll play...you're sticking your head in the sand if you dismiss how this is perceived by 18 year old kids.

quote:

Daniels, Winston, Penix, Gonzalez, Brown Jr., David, Waller, Witherspoon, Jacobs, Young, Burfict, all willing to have a dialogue

Dialogue. Great! Now discuss how "having to have a dialogue" with recruits and their families puts Gruden's recruiting effort behind other schools.

Look, I don't have anything against Gruden...but you and I don't get to just dismiss the 800 pound gorilla in the room. It's there, and it's real whether you and I like it or not. For that reason alone, "Thanks, Coach Gruden, for you're interest...but we're going in a different direction." You can beat your chest, or your dick, all you want about whether or not it's fair, right, or prudent...but you do have to acknowledge it. And if you're the LSU AD and say "We're going with Gruden", without addressing the issue, well, wow. Thank God you're not the AD.

ETA: I posted this in another thread...if that baggage isn't a big deal, why hasn't even lowly Division 27 Dildo Valley State hired him? WHY?

If Deion Sanders can be successful coaching in today's college game, why couldn't Jon Gruden?

The real reason Gruden can’t be considered is evident… people just talking around it… LSU has to much on air talent on TV and too many outspoken players to even consider Gruden
