Blake Baker's defense improvement was a mirage

The LSU defense being ranked so high was accomplished against 4 teams. Clemson...hideously overrated...SELA and La Tech as one might expect on offense. And Florida moved the ball up and down the field but Lagway's 5 INTs, most of which were stupid passes after staring down the WR got LSU off the field. The bottom line:

After almost 2 years, Baker still can't stop a running QB. And after 2 years, LSU still gives up too many 3rd down conversions, a lot of them in yardage situations that SHOULD give the defense a great chance to stop. I WILL say that LSU's DL is about as pathetic as it gets in rushing the passer as the QBs sit back there ordering extra mustard on their hot dog as they scan the field. The LSU offense is bad for sure but anyone who thinks Baker is some great defensive mind hasn't been watching the same issues for years now with absolutely no improvement...#1 containing running QB and #2 getting off the field on 3rd downs.

It is def challenge for this group to stop a running qb. They did ok against SC but there were issues.
LB play has been really bad since Whit has been down. These guys are out of position, 2 LB going to cober the same guy, no help in getting containment of QB

Didn’t they flash a stat that A&M was ranked like 116 or something converting 3rd and 6 or more? And then we proceeded to give them up all night.

It was a scheduling improvement. Just look at the W-L records of the first 4 teams LSU played.

I agree. I keep seeing people trying to take some of the blame off of Baker for this defense but the fact of the matter is, going back to his days at Mizzou as DC he's never been able to stop a mobile QB. Really his defenses haven't been able to stop really good QBs either. And I know that's true for most defenses when playing against a good QB, but at some point you'd at least get lucky and stop a really good QB with a great defensive game plan, but it just hasn't happened for Baker and his defenses.

Some of it is most definitely coaching as we continue to see the same mistakes game after game. Things like missed tackles, players over pursuing, etc etc.

The defense did well against bad teams.

LSU has "stopped" Sellars twice...last year he was killing LSU in the 1st half, got injured, and didn't play the 2nd half. This year. Kentucky knocked him out of the game which was the game before LSU. So no way was he 100%. He looked much better against Alabama Saturday...speed was back, tougher, etc.

I honestly can't tell who is playing LB on a play because other than the occasional Weeks play, the LB are invisible. I have no idea what position Perkins plays because it doesn't matter. He either takes himself out of most plays by bad reads or misses tackles. I have moved him from 3rd day pick to undrafted. He simply is not a good football player.

The Clemson win was a mirage. I really think LA Tech could beat Clemson this season.

The defense was improved. Maybe not as improved as we hoped, and there’s also been injuries.

The 2023 defense would’ve given up 40 to Clemson and UF this year.

Every team has injuries. The secondary has stayed healthy. Whit Weeks has missed 2 games. The DL other than Reliford has been pretty healthy. On Clemson, in 5 of 7 games they have been at 27 points or under...10...27...21..21..24. The only teams they scores a lot against were
UNC and BC. As far as Florida goes, the ONLY reason LSU won that game was Lagway's 5 INTs including a pick 6. And the defense didn't really cause those turnovers. Lagway stares down his target receiver the entire time after the ball is snapped.

The last 2 games, offenses have done whatever they wanted and only stopped themselves

But i mean…5 INTs is a hell if a day for any defense. How many other UF opponents are getting 5 picks?
