The Vele trade

Can we please stop with the irrational narrative around the Vele trade? So tired of hearing how we "wasted" a 4th round pick on a 6'4" 28 year old WR. Here are the Saints most recent 4th round picks:
'25 - Stutsman, Riley (Both look promising but TBD)
'24 - No pick
'23 - Nick Saldiveri, Jake Haener (lol)
'22 - No pick
'21 - Ian Book (lol)
'20 - Adam Trautman (Traded our 4th and future picks for a late 3rd here)
'19 - CJG
'18 - Rick Leonard (bigger lol)
So we are 1/8? Maybe 2/8?
Here are Vele's stats last year in Denver as a rookie:
13 games played
41 Catches / 55 targets
475 Yards / 11.6 per catch
3 TD's
Week 14 vs. Raiders - 6/80
Week 18 vs. Chiefs - 4/50/1 TD
Those stats would have made him our 2nd most prolific pass catcher last year behind Juwan. Would you be willing to trade Ian Book, Rick Leonard or Nick Saldiveri for that potential?
His age is irrelevant. If he can help us win in the next 3-4 years then it was definitely worth the lottery pick of a 4th round choice.
Rant over. Downvote away.
ETA: He had a TD taken away last week on a holding call and was breaking open yesterday in Chicago on a corner route when Rattler threw a pick to a wide open Bears LB.
ETAA: This isn't about his production in 3 - 4 games. It's about the value paid for the asset and what he may provide over the long term. Draft picks are currency, which I understand, but it seems that many are overstating the value of a 4th round pick which may have a 10-20% chance of hitting. Vele actually has produced for an NFL team increasing his odds of being a contributor compared to Saldiveri, Book, Leonard, etc.

You know who misses on the 4th rd pick 100% of the time? The one who doesn’t make the pick. The same people bungling those picks you listed are the ones who identified Vele as a trade target
And the backbone of this team during its heyday was built on late picks
Bushrod & Evans were 4th rd picks. Carl Nicks and Morestead was a 5th, Strief and Colston was a 7th. I mean these guys won a Super Bowl for you.
He has 4 catches on the season on a team with shite WRs and TEs. “His age is irrelevant” - frick it is, the whole point was he was expected to contribute right away.
Just tell me when we can expect his contributions to commence?

we don't have the most prolific passing offense.
he was hurt for 2 weeks.
he's caught pretty much everything thrown his way.
he's had two receptions taken away for penalties.
i don't think he's able to throw ball to himself but maybe we can try.

This is why I know you don't understand an NFL front office.
Do you realize that every player you mentioned as a successful choice was taken over 15 years ago? Like I said, it's a lottery pick. Let's hope Vele hits. He needs someone to throw him the ball to improve his stats.
ETA: Our last successful 4th round pick was David Onyemata. 10 years ago. I agree that successful teams are built this way. But we hit 1/10. Maybe 2/10. Sometimes you draft them. Sometimes you trade for them. I'm willing to take a 20% chance that Vele is actually an NFL player based on his performance last year under Sean Payton.

You don’t think the Saints player personnel department signed off on Vele
The point still remains. To discount the value of the pick bc the saints suck at drafting is stupid.
And there are like 15 rookie pass catchers drafted 4th rd or later who are out pacing his 4 catch, 29 yard campaign

The Saints player personnel department is segmented. There is one side focused on college scouting/drafting and one side focused on existing NFL players. Loomis oversees both. It is quite possible that we had a decent grade on Vele in the '24 draft but Sean took him first. And we had an opportunity to get a proven commodity with a 4th round lottery ticket. Sean took Trautman back. Want him again?
It's possible that Mickey, Sean and Jeff Ireland look for similar traits.

Kinda stupid thread to start by acknowledging both our 4th round picks look to be very promising this year then say we not missing out on much by trading away what will likely be a higher 4th this year.

Do you like Eric McCoy? Alvin Kamara? Ryan Ramczyk? Chris Olave? Fuaga? Bresee?
The draft is a lottery for every team. Certainly some are better than others but these same people have picked some of the cornerstones of our team. Like every other team, they have swung and missed. It's about performance and potential. Everyone drafted has varying degrees of both. Foskey had both and flamed. Probably more to do with his work ethic than his athletic ability. Jordan Howden taken 3 rounds later is still working hard to be in the league. Some guys have that trait and others don't. Anthony Richardson? Zach Wilson? Ryan Leaf? Mamula? Jamarcus "purple drank" Russell?
Sometimes you take chances on athletic ability and they don't pan out. It's so frustrating to expect people like you expect us to bat .900 in the draft when .350 gets you in the HOF.

Vele played 15 snaps yesterday, we lost by two touchdowns and threw 32 times. He played 18 snaps the week before. We can opine on the guy up and down, the proof is in the snap counts. He’s averaging 0.7 catches and 4.8 yards per game. You got your Adam trautman bubba

Easily should be WR 3 on this team.
Posted on 10/20/25 at 5:21 pm to Chad504boy
Why is his snap count getting reduced Chad?
25 snaps in week 5 vs the giants
18 snaps in week 6
15 snaps in week 7
Give me your nonsensical take here

B/C Payton doesn’t have a history of making something out of no name receivers throughout his career…

For starters offense had 7 more snaps week 5. For backups, I don’t even care. Arguing about Vele right now is for haters.

20 - Adam Trautman
Trautman was actually a third round pick.
But a better comp recently took would be Trey Hendrickson. He was taken in the third round as a comp pick at 103.
This past draft the 103 pick was the third pick in the 4th round. Probably close to where Denver will be drafting with our pick.
So since you listed these shite players, you should include the allpro we drafted at the same spot we traded Vele for….
