Weekly Coaching Malpractice Example #405802903 - Allowing The Opponent Double Possessions
Posted on 10/20/25 at 12:37 pm

Coming out of halftime.
It is already stupid enough to take ball first when you win the toss, especially with an offense that has not gone three and out to start a game only three times the past two years. ETA: My apologies as I did not know we haven't won a toss this year. Either way the main point of this thread is the coaching staff having the opportunity to hold the ball before half and not doing it by calling pass plays and not forcing the oppo to use TOs
We then compound that stupidity by almost seemingly purposely allowing the opponent the extra possession before half knowing they get ball first to start the second half.
We did it again Saturday and it costs us big time. We did it again vs USCe, but fortunately they ended up not scoring.
I really shouldn't be shocked any longer when I see basic football strategy being shite on by this staff, but once again Saturday I sat in awe at the blatant incompetance of this group.
Our defense got the only stop of the half on their side of the field. Truly a gift from Vandy's coaching staff. I don't blame them for going for it there, they were going through this "elite" defense all day like it wasn't there. But low and behold we got a stop.
A little over a minute before half, their side of the field, and they have three time outs. You do everything you can there to accomplish two things, in this order:
1) make them use their time outs and run out the clock so they don't have time for another possession, especially if they get ball first the second half
2) put up some points
Well, we got one of those two things right, but unfortunately, when you have Sloan calling plays, you are going to run some of the dumbest shite while stopping the clock.
It was hilarious watching that sequence. Then we come out of the timeout and run a "trick" play where Nuss throws it in the hands of a lineman that has it clearly read from the word go. Again, come out of a timeout, and we run absolute garbage. Clock stops. Throw again, miss, clock stops.
LSU Held the ball a whopping 20 seconds, kicked a FG, pulled within one, and gave Vandy 45 secons with TWO timeouts.
Of course Vandy went through Baker's "elite" scheme in no time and nearly got in the EZ. Instead of being down 1 we are down 4 going into half.
That FG changed the entire complexion of the game. Instead of catching up from two scores all second half,
Who am I kidding, Sloan would have fricked that up too.
We pay 15M a year for this stupid shite.

We put 4 OLman out in the slots, and left 2 or 3 blockers in middle of the field. And we proceed to throw a screen right over the center where there are only 2 to 3 blockers, yet 6 Vandy Defenders. You might as well have asked 4 OLman to just sit the bench and played that play with 7 offensive players. Unbelievably stupid play.

One of the weird things that many here are stuck on. Analytics say it's negligible.

ETA: We’ve actually lost the coin toss in every game

BK pulled out some ridiculous stat at his radio show and said something like “teams that get the ball first and score in that drive win 73% of the time.”
I don’t recall if that was the exact wording but it was something along those lines, and it would suggest our entire game planning philosophy is based on generalized trends without consideration of unique team contexts. That might be a good stat if we had a functional offense, but he seems unable to admit that we don’t have one of those

A three page rant on a completely inaccurate scenario.
I give you the rant.

First thing that came to my mind watching all of that unfold was the "fake punt" Indy ran against NE several years ago before i quit watching the NFL.
I'll never forget watching that all go down in real time, complete with INDY snapping the ball knowing they were about to get smashed, but they did it anyway and failed miserably.
It is like our staff wants us to be the laughing stock of the sport now.

Can we try this?

What is worse, is this year we supposedly had an elite defense. If this is the case (it isn't), you put them on the field first to set the tone. Every analytic breakdown of coin tosses states you defer.
Nope. Not LSU. We want the ball so we can hold it for 20 seconds, throw three incompletions, and give you the ball for your first possession close to mid field.

Fun fact: the last time we WON the toss & chose to RECEIVE….
Was against Ole Miss on October 12, 2024 & we won that game 29-26.

My apologies for this. I quit paying attention to that because BK's strategy has always been take the ball first. I just assumed we kept doing that all year.
If we haven't won a toss yet, then our opponent's know better than our own coach, which is just typical. Hell even Hammond High knew to defer.

If folks want to hate on a coach that's fine, most of the stuff thrown around here is just nuts though.

Lane Kiffin won the toss & chose to receive against LSU. They started with a 3 & out

You need to be able to separate a bad outcome with a bad decision.
We ran 6 plays on the drive after the turnover on downs. We got a first down. The problem is that LSU is ripe for a negative play at any point due to the OL problems. That's what happened. We got first down...but then followed it up with a negative running play (certainly an attempt to use up some clock).
I can't really complain about the playcalling there. It was an opportunity to take the lead heading into the half. We were on their side of the field.
You are trying too hard to find something to complain about. There's tons of legitimate things to complain about.

Ok great, we haven't won a toss. I apologize for not watching the toss and thinking BK kept doing what he always did.
Now, the actual point of the OP is still giving away the double possession before halftime.

Yeah OP is wrong on the coin toss, but definitely right to talk about he mgmt of the possession after the turnover. Terribile playcalling and the lack of effort or foresight to try and bleed the clock out to prevent Vandy from getting another possession was ridiculous and simple clock management stuff.
In a game that was always going to be predicated on possessions we gave Vandy and extra one and it resulted in a net neutral after our defense got a big turnover on downs.
These are the things I thought BK would excel in when we hired him 4 years ago and his clock and in-game management baffles me and has left me severely disappointed. That small series of events were critical in a game like this and all SEC games for that matter. The lack of attention to detail in game is inexcusable for a guy making $10MM /year.

Now to the main point of the OP, coaches allowing double possessions when we don't have to
