The longer this plays out the worse it gets for the program.

If the scenario of 53 million for Kelly’s buyout and more for his staff is too much to eat this year, dark days are ahead again. Another season like this and there will be more portal exits than Kelly can manage. The talent and roster numbers could be back in the same shape we saw in 2022. Stubborn lame duck coaches rarely make a complete 180. Rip the bandaid off at season’s end.

It feels like the only way that will happen is if the wheels fall off and LSU ends up 6-6 or 7-5. Even then they might just scapegoat Sloan and Davis. If Kelly survives by throwing those two under the bus and brings in a new OC and OL coach, what are they going to do? We don’t have the talent on the OL and will need to spend big for a transfer QB. Kelly starts next year on the hot seat and the “entitled fans” are screaming about every dumb press conference.

He needs to just bow out.

Except Kelly is the rare example of making that complete 180 at Notre Dame.

2016 - 4-8
2017 - 10-3
2018 - 12-1
2019 - 11-2
2020 - 10-2
2021 - 11-1

Not expecting him to be able to do it again at LSU but it's all I've got to hang on to, considering Kelly will be here at a minimum of one more year.

That wording makes it sound as if CBK took us out of the dark days. I guess he did with a Heisman, 1 Alabama win, an OT win against OM, and 1 trip to Atlanta?

This right here goes to show NIL needs reform. The pros get locked into their contracts. It's ridiculous to pay these kids millions and they can walk away anytime they like. I was against paying them above the table to begin with and always will be. But it's never going back to how it was. But it's also time for them to reap what they sow. You want your money, now you're stuck here.

I would love to see a breakdown of the "turnaround" by actual opponents that he beat in those years. As an independent, it'd be easy to manufacture a turnaround by scheduling easier teams to pump up your record.

It’s no hard to go 10-2 when you just play one marquee game, USC, Stanford and military academys every year

Kelly has proven he can build a competent/elite offense with the right OC and mobile QB. What needs to happen is the firing of Sloan and Brad Davis, and the hiring of a proven elite OC and Oline coach. Then find the best dual threat QB in the portal. If that can happen, make damn sure to hold on to:

RB:
Durham
Berry
Transfer RB

TE:
Both Greens
Lafleur

Olinemen:
Adams
Curne
Echols
Solomon Thomas
Transfer Center

WR:
Parker
Hill
All the young guys
Transfer

Defense:
You have to hold this class together at all costs and fill holes with transfer guys.

If the class falls apart, we are better off firing Kelly.
By the way, I’m off the Kelly boat but this is what needs to happen if they aren’t going to fire Kelly after the season. I think the combination of Sloan, Davis and a bad fit for Nuss is the major problem. While the defense isn’t perfect, it is light years ahead of where we started. Our ceiling with Kelly is 10 wins and our floor is 6-6. A title isn’t even on the table.
