So if IU is paying $11.2m-does the next LSU coach make $13m+. Is BK underpaid?

I mean if IU is going to reset the market for mid level Power 4 coaches where does that leave the market rate for upper echelon teams: $13m -15m+?

Next LSU coach deal 8 years $104m - $120m?

ETA: IU fully guaranteed that new contract.

BK hasn't earned a raise.

I would say the opposite actually, with the portal, NIL and rev share you’re most of the time better off with shorter deals you can get out of if needed. There’s less need to give a coach a long deal for stability.

Unless you’re getting a really heavy hitter it’s probably not worth the risk of being trapped in a 10 year deal.

And yet that’s exactly what Woody did

Yes, the contract will be bigger. LSU isn’t going to take a chance on somebody if they did buyout Kelly down the road. Like most of us believe, this isn’t the school for a guy to prove it here or have zero head coaching experience

Is this the first time you’ve seen this? It’s how it works. Coaches get raises when they either a) win a championship or b) have leverage because they threaten to leave for another job opening.

Coaches have these schools by the balls.

That’s insane to me and the definition of insanity- doing it over and over again expecting a different result.

Picking a HC is a crapshoot.

Buying another big name in no way guarantees future results- especially in this era where the competition is that much greater with NIL

Never seen this from a school like IU.

Overpaid

I wish these coach's contracts were based on win incentives. Unlock the full amount with a 9 win season within the 12 game schedule.

Sure, but LSU athletics has to protect their investments and money maker that is football. You can’t afford to let it get to the point of the 2020-2021 seasons. When people start looking at this like a business, it will change perspectives.

I think they’re eventually going to have to put a cap on these salaries they aren’t sustainable long term.

Yes. If freakin Indiana football is paying 11 million LSU will soon be paying 15. It’s absurd

Not for an LSU head coach. A 9 win season should unlock 70% of the contract. A 10 win regular season should unlock 80% of the contract. Two 10 win regular seasons within 4 years or playoffs unlocks 100% of the contract. Two 8 win regular seasons in a row drops the coach into 60% of the contract and one 5 win regular season removes 100% of the buyout.

There has to be some incentive and accountability.

frick it, pay the next guy $15m if he's a superstar.

Just max it out at 5 years.

The only coach you're going to get to sign that type of contract is a Matt McMahon-type.

Why not just keep it simple? $1 mil per win. 9 win season = $9 mil. NC = $16 mil.

Eta: 5 year max contract

Compared to what? He hasn't topped 9-3, won the SEC, or been in serious conversation for the playoff. After this season he'll likely only have beaten Bama once in four seasons.
