In the lawsuit that lasted 8 years in court, eligible current owners will receive $3,380 each. The three named customers who originally filed the lawsuit will receive 30k each. The attorneys who represented the plaintiffs will receive a cool 57 million.

Why only California, Idaho, and North Carolina?

Most lawyers I know are decent folks though a bit power/ money hungry. However, this kind of abuse of the system is not good for everyone overall and needs to stop.

I agree with most of your statements… but explain the risk that lawyers take in a class action lawsuit or any lawsuit for that matter… I know time is an asset in itself but would losing a lawsuit disqualify you from filing another one

Slinging legal advice all over TD, not just in this thread but a bunch of others. Anyone looking for legal advice?

No, but spending 150-250k on experts and 2-4yrs in litigation to possibly lose is a massive risk

Class Action are incredibly expensive for both sides. I have defended them regularly for 30 years and have 4 right now in various stages. Win, lose or settle, we get paid. Plaintiff's attorneys on contingency only get paid if they win and if they lose they are out a huge amount of time and the costs. While plaintiffs in most jurisdictions still technically owe the costs reimburcement to the firm it basically never happens. Closing a class is quite an endevour on its own much less going forward. Also people sometimes see a settlement and thing there wasn't much work but getting to a big settlement with an F500 company like GM means you have to do 90% percent of the work and expend most of the costs. You have to be able to prove to the defense team it is a winnable case.
Winning a class for plaintiff's lawyers can be quite lucrative, usually less than it appears when all the lawyers involved are paid, but they have been down a lot of dead ends for every class they close and a good percentage of the classes closed don't end up with large payouts. You only hear about the big ones and never think about it when my side of the court room wins.

Then corporations would get away with screwing people out of shite all the time without consequence. No individual consumer would ever get any money back. And the corps would have minimal deterrent to not screw people

Which is why these shysters won't touch a case that they don't know with near certainty that they can litigate to a point where the big companies settle for a few big checks to the original plaintiffs and a lump sum distributed to all the chumps who signed on.
And of course, the customary fees for the firm who represented said plaintiffs.

Explain how that happened here before the lawsuit. I won’t hold my breath.

Well, explain why they sell crappy products with the larger potential for PR issues in the internet-driven world even with the spectre of law suits? GM has this 5.3l PR and litigation nightmare and yet they are dealing with 600,000+ 6.2L recalls. Even lawsuits and PR doesn't prevent it but just PR alone will?
