Does anyone know of a countertop ice maker that either

1) Keeps the ice frozen over night

or

2) Has a timer that I can set to start making ice at a certain time ?

My family now uses more ice than our refrigerator ice maker can keep up with. I bought a $70 countertop icemaker but when we wake up in the morning, the ice in the container is half melted and melts very quickly when we put in our cups/water bottles. When I get home from lunch, the same deal. Ideally I would like an ice maker that can either keep the ice frozen for longer or has a timer that I can set to start making ice at like 5 AM so we can wake up to fresh ice to start our day. Any recoomendations?

Most standalone ice makers don't do that, they pretty much make new ice as the old stuff eventually melts in the storage bin. Certainly won't find a countertop unit like that.

If it was me looking into countertop units, GE Profile Opal 2.0. They seem to be well made and everyone I know that has one seems to like the ice and how it functions. One couple I know bought one and sits on their bar right above an already nice undercounter unit. They are WiFi enabled so you can program/schedule through an app.

Buy a cheap electrical outlet timer & plug ice maker into timer

I know this isn't what you asked for, but this is honestly one of your best bets OP

I tried this and th machine won't make ice until the power button is pressed so this doesn't work.

Unless you wake up at 9am, anything starting at 5am is not making a lot of ice.

What is your fridge model number? All of the new fridges have tiny ice makers, its frustrating. I've seen people with the old school ice bins modify them to drop into a bigger bin.

But the reality is the old school method of filling a tray with water and freezing it takes time. There's only so much ice it will produce.

The newer method of "clear ice" produces ice with freezing sheets but then they don't actually have refrigerated departments.

the countertop ice maker can fill its 1.5 lb basket in about 2 hours so 5 am would be plenty of time. The issue is that once full, it melts but not uniformly and the icecubes that block the sensor that says the tray is full don't fall and new ice isn't made until I mannually move them.

Bypass the Switch/Power Button:
Connecting the two terminals of the switch/power button directly this effectively closes the switch.

Can I get a more detailed explanation of how to do this?

You would need to take it apart to access the back side of the power button. There should be two wires going to the power button. Unplug the two wires (if they're not soldered to the switch). Connect the two wires together. This will bypass the switch. Plugging it in or unplugging will be the only way to turn it on or off. The outlet timer will also turn it on or off if you want to do that.

And its $70? So this can't be very much ice?

And then OP can move in with you when his house inevitably burns to the ground.

This is honestly one of the most retarded things I've read on this website, and that's saying a lot.

I mean its not a ton but its enough. It wouldn't be enough on its own but its enough when combined with the refrigerator ice machine.

Basically the issue is that in the mornng My kids each need a water bottle for school, I need a water to bring to work and my wife needs one as well. Our refrigerator's ice machine can fill up 3 of our waters but there isn't enough for the 4th and then once its drained, it takes hours for the ice machine to fully catch up. The countertop ice machine in theory is supposed to fill up the last water with some left over. And it does make enough ice for this to happen but the isue is that the ice is half melted in the mroning and due to the way that it is melting, new ice doesn't get produced until I manually mix up the ice to free up the "full" sensor.

Explain. I am not an electrician so I don't really know but why would it catch fire if all we are doing is bypassing the on off switch and making a timer the on off switch instead?

For context, at the moment, the ice machine is on all the time so in the above scenario, the ice machine would be powered on much less frequently and for much shorter periods.

How is connecting two wires with a wire nut retarded? He already has probably 100+ of these type of wire connections in his house.

New plan: I put an ice tray in my freezer and I’m just gonna let the countertop ice maker run in the afternoons and then fill the ice bin in the freezer when it fills up. Not really the solution I wanted but it’ll give us more ice and I won’t burn the house down.

I dump my bin in gallon zip lock bags and throw into the freezer for a better hard frozen ice

I’m on my second one. They work great, until they don’t. My first one died after maybe 18 months. The second one is working great, but has developed some motor noises. I’m sure it kicks on in the middle of the night, but we always have a full bin in the morning.

They also cost a hell of a lot more than $70.

I only have the ice maker in my 20+ year old top-freezer Whirlpool fridge, it will probably out live me. I have always run it on an good water filter system, think that's a key to any such appliance be it an ice maker or coffee maker but ice makers seem particularly prone to water quality issues.

Well that's the price of what he currently has and wanted an option that could be programmed to a schedule, I'm not a fan of smart appliances but his options are pretty limited.
